PSAT Testing – October 15

On Tuesday, October 15, all students in grades 8–11 will take the PSAT. This important assessment helps students practice for the SAT and provides valuable information about college and career readiness.

For our 11th-grade students, the PSAT also serves as the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program. High performance can open the door to scholarship opportunities and national recognition.

To help students prepare, families can access the official PSAT practice test and information booklet -Taking the PSAT. We encourage students to review the materials ahead of time so they can feel confident on test day.

Sign Up Now for the October ACT!

Parents and students, don’t miss the opportunity to register for the October 18 ACT test. The registration deadline is Thursday, September 12. You can register at myACT.org.

The October ACT is one of only three test dates each year that offers the Test Information Release (TIR) service. With TIR, students receive a copy of their test questions, their answers, and the correct answers. This valuable resource helps students understand their mistakes and better prepare for future test dates.

We encourage students to take the ACT more than once. Research shows that most students improve their scores the second or third time they test. Even a small increase in score can expand college admission opportunities and may qualify students for additional scholarships.

We encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity! Juniors and seniors can see their school counselor for information about test waivers.

Google Classroom Class Login Information

We are excited to share that you can stay connected to your child’s learning by joining their Google Classroom as a parent/guardian. By joining, you will receive email summaries that include upcoming assignments and due dates, class announcements, and updates on missing work.

These summaries will help you stay informed and support your child’s academic success. Please note that parents do not log directly into Google Classroom; instead, you receive the information through email once you accept the teacher’s invitation.

If you have not yet received an invitation to join, please reach out to your child’s teacher, and one will be sent to you. We encourage all parents to take advantage of this tool to stay engaged with classroom activities and student progress.

At Southern University Laboratory School, we take great pride in recognizing students who exemplify our core values of scholarship, leadership, and service. This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight three outstanding scholars across our divisions: Stephen Brisco, III, a bright and kind-hearted 3rd grader in elementary; Kelson Osby, a dedicated and respectful 7th grader in middle school; and Brandon Odom, a high school standout who recently completed a prestigious summer internship with ExxonMobil. These students represent the very best of the Kitten community, and we celebrate their achievements both in and out of the classroom.

Elementary Student

We are proud to announce that our Elementary Student Spotlight this month is Stephen Brisco, III, a bright and dedicated 3rd grader in Mrs. Boudreaux’s class. Stephen consistently demonstrates teamwork, responsibility, and kindness toward his peers. He has a true passion for math and science and brings enthusiasm to every lesson. In his free time, Stephen enjoys drawing and building with his Legos, letting his creativity shine just as brightly as his academics.

Stephen is the proud big brother of Silas, a 1st grader here at Southern Lab, and the son of Stephen Brisco, Jr. and Miesha Beverly Brisco. His leadership and positive spirit shine in and out of the classroom, and we are excited to celebrate him as a shining example of the Kitten family.

September Message from Mrs. Seals

We’re off to a fantastic start this school year! Our students have shown up in proper uniforms and ready to learn, and we sincerely thank our parents for their daily support

As we near the halfway point of the first nine weeks, classes are in full swing and students are working hard. Please take a moment to review a few key reminders.

I would first like to thank you for a wonderful start to the new school year. Our students have done a phenomenal job with proper uniforms, and we truly appreciate our parents for helping ensure students are ready each morning. Your support makes a difference!

Classes are now in full swing, and it’s hard to believe we are already quickly approaching the halfway mark of our first nine weeks. Time is moving fast, and we are so proud of the hard work our students are putting in each day.

If you missed Open House, click the link to see the message to hear updates for SULS.

A few friendly reminders:

  • Students may not arrive on campus before 7:30 AM and must be picked up by 3:30 PM, even on game days, unless they are under the supervision of a coach or sponsor. Students are considered tardy after 7:50 AM, so let’s continue working together to have everyone on time. Every minute counts!

  • As required by state law, cell phones are not allowed during the instructional day. Students may not use or display their phones between 7:50 AM and 3:10 PM. In case of an emergency, they may use the phone in the front office, and parents can always contact the office if needed.

Handbooks and planners are on the way! Each student will receive a printed copy of our school handbook, and grades 3–12 will also receive planners. Once distributed, we will meet with each grade level to review expectations together. In the meantime, the handbook is available on our school website.

I am excited to share that we have received brand new Chromebooks for classroom use! Each teacher now has a Chromebook cart, and students who need a device at home can loan one from the school. Please note: loaned devices must remain at home and are not to be brought back to campus daily. If you have not yet received the Google Form to request a Chromebook, please use the link below.

Chromebook Care

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us keep students prepared, on time, and ready to learn each morning. Every little effort makes a big difference. We are grateful for your support and look forward to an exciting and productive remainder of the quarter. Together, we are building excellence by choice, not by chance!

Spotlight on Excellence: Brandon Odom Shines in ExxonMobil Internship

At Southern University Laboratory School, we believe in cultivating excellence both inside and outside the classroom. This summer, SULS Kitten Brandon Odom exemplified that spirit by earning a coveted spot in ExxonMobil’s High School Internship Program. From engineering challenges to community service, Brandon’s journey reflects the values we instill in every student—leadership, scholarship, and service.

At Southern University Laboratory School, we take immense pride in celebrating the accomplishments of our scholars who embody our values of scholarship, leadership, and service. Today, we would like to highlight Brandon Odom, a standout student who recently completed an exceptional summer internship with ExxonMobil.

Brandon was selected as one of only 40 high school students across the region to participate in ExxonMobil’s prestigious High School Internship Program—an eight-week, paid summer experience designed for rising juniors and seniors. This competitive program pairs students with mentors and assigns them real-world projects that foster career exploration and professional growth.

During his internship, Brandon was placed at the ExxonMobil Lubricant Plant in Port Allen, Louisiana. His primary assignment was to implement a 5S organizational system in the mezzanine area of the lubricant warehouse. This was a project that required strategic planning, collaboration, and hands-on problem-solving. Throughout the summer, Brandon worked closely with engineers, operators, and his mentor, gaining invaluable insight into plant operations and the field of mechanical engineering.

Beyond his technical work, Brandon also embraced ExxonMobil’s commitment to community service. He volunteered with several nonprofit organizations, including United Way, United Cajun Navy, and Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating the same spirit of service that defines the Kitten Community.

The internship culminated in a formal presentation of his project to ExxonMobil site leaders. This was a moment that showcased Brandon’s growth in communication, leadership, and professional confidence. Reflecting on the experience, Brandon expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, noting how it solidified his aspirations to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.

Brandon’s journey is a testament to the excellence we nurture at Southern University Laboratory School. His achievements reflect not only his personal dedication but also the supportive environment that empowers our students to lead in every facet of life.

Congratulations, Brandon! We are proud of you and look forward to all the great things your future holds.

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Chidlow on this well-deserved new chapter. We’re proud to have her leadership guiding the way at SULS!

Principal’s Message

Principal Nadia Washington Seals is excited to welcome students and families back for a promising new school year at Southern University Laboratory School. With the theme “Excellence by Choice, Not by Chance,” the focus is on daily intentional growth and success.

Students are reminded to complete their summer reading to start strong, and families should finalize uniform orders ahead of the August 11 start date. New this year: students may wear Kelly green or hunter green tennis shoes as part of their casual uniform.

Don’t miss the One Stop Shop Back to School Bash on August 2, 2025—an essential event for all families to gear up for the year ahead.

Dear Kitten Family,

Nadia W. Seals, Principal

Nadia_Seals@sulabschool.com

I hope this message finds you enjoying a safe and restful summer! I am truly excited to welcome each of you back for what promises to be an exceptional school year at Southern University Laboratory School. We cannot wait to see our students fill our halls once again with their energy, curiosity, and Kitten Pride!

Our theme this year is: “Excellence by Choice, Not by Chance.” Together, we will continue to create an environment where our students are empowered to choose greatness every day.

As we prepare for a strong start, I want to remind our students to continue working on their summer reading requirements. Building strong reading habits now sets a positive tone for success in the classroom this fall.

Families, please remember to finalize your school uniform orders to ensure that your child is ready for our “Dress for Success” policy, which begins on August 11, 2025. Students who are not in the appropriate attire will be required to report to TOR, so it is important that everyone is prepared and in compliance from day one.

Hot off the press! I am excited to share that the administration has approved an update to our uniform policy: students may now wear green tennis shoes as part of their casual uniform. Please note that only Kelly green and hunter green are approved. Lime green, mint green, pastel, neon, or other shades of green are not permitted. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this new addition.

Finally, mark your calendars for our One Stop Shop Back to School Bash on August 2, 2025. This is an important event to ensure a smooth start to the year, so all new and returning families, please make plans to attend!

I look forward to seeing each of you very soon and starting another year of learning, growth, and success. Let’s make it our best yet!

Mrs. Nadia Washington Seals
Principal

SULS Uniform Ordering Fall 2025

As we gear up for the 2025-2026 school year, we are excited to announce the launch of our new uniform ordering process. Southern University Laboratory School, in collaboration with the PTO, has partnered with The Printing Source to streamline the uniform purchasing experience for our families. Starting this year, uniforms will be ordered online via the https://mytshirtquote.com/sulab/shop/home website.

Kitten Nation,

We are thrilled to unveil our updated uniform ordering system for Fall 2025. We are broadening our established collaboration with The Printing Source to exclusively offer SULS school uniform tops and accessories, including dress shirts, polo shirts, cardigans, jackets, and ties. The ordering platform is live and accepting uniform orders. Stay tuned for more information to follow shortly.

In previous years, the Kitten Store has efficiently handled our uniform orders. However, as our school grew, the volunteer-run Kitten Store reached capacity. Therefore, we have decided to transition our uniform ordering process to The Printing Source to better accommodate our expanding school community.

Uniforms will be ordered online via the https://www.mytshirtquote.com/sulab website. We believe that this partnership will continue to provide an efficient and convenient way for parents to purchase uniforms for their children.

We have attached a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheet to this email to assist you with any questions regarding the uniform ordering process. Please take a moment to review it, and feel free to reach out if you need further clarification.

Thank you for your cooperation and support as we continue to enhance the uniform purchasing experience for our school community.
