Southern University Laboratory School 4th Graders Experience an Unforgettable Day of Giving and Inspiration

Southern University Laboratory School 4th graders had an unforgettable day! Thanks to Todd Graves (Raising Cane’s) and Gayle Benson (New Orleans Saints & Pelicans), our students received brand-new bikes and inspiring words about hard work and giving back. Special thanks to Ms. Pooler and YMCA Director Sean Elliot for making this moment possible.

The holiday season brought an incredible surprise for Southern University Laboratory School’s 4th graders—a gift that will be remembered for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of Todd Graves, founder and CEO of Raising Cane’s, and Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, our students received brand-new bicycles as part of a community initiative to spread joy and promote healthy lifestyles.

This remarkable event wasn’t just about the bikes; it was about creating lasting memories and inspiring students. Our students had the rare opportunity to meet two of Louisiana’s most influential leaders in business and sports. Todd Graves and Gayle Benson shared words of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of hard work, kindness, and giving back to the community.

The partnership between Raising Cane’s and the YMCA made this day possible, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to YMCA Director Sean Elliot and his dedicated team for their leadership and support in organizing this event. Their commitment to youth development and community engagement truly shines through moments like these.

We also want to recognize Ms. Pooler, our amazing 4th-grade teacher, for her unwavering dedication to her students. Her efforts ensured that our Lab School scholars were prepared to fully embrace this unique experience.

Counselors Corner December 25

Welcome to the Southern University Laboratory School Counseling Department! This semester has been filled with exciting events like Red Ribbon Week, College & Career Readiness Day, and personalized academic counseling to support student success. We are committed to providing resources, guidance, and opportunities that help every student thrive academically and personally.

Southern University School Counseling Department

A sincere thank you and appreciation to our students and the entire Lab Family for your participation during Red Ribbon Week!  We were super excited to engage with our students during their lunch shift.  We would also like to thank all of our parents and students who came out for our parent and student night meetings.  Our meetings are held to keep you abreast of academic requirements and other pertinent information so that our students may receive the best academic experience possible.  The School Counseling Department has been busy these last few months with student engagements and meaningful support services. Class rings were ordered during Herff Jones’ visit on October 8, 2025, and our seniors learned valuable information from LOSFA representatives on October 14. Southern University, Alcorn State University, LSU, and many more institutions visited our campus to recruit our students and share opportunities during our annual College and Career Readiness Day on October 28, 2025.

Academic counseling was in full effect throughout November. School counselors met with students individually, wrote letters of recommendation, assisted seniors with college applications, held parent meetings, and provided guidance to students who needed a little extra support along the way. Our Seniors and Juniors also had the wonderful opportunity to tour and enjoy lunch at Southern University A&M College.

If your student is in need of any of these services, please do not hesitate to contact your school counselor. We value the opportunity to support our students and continue building strong, positive relationships.

As we close out the semester and take time to rest and rejuvenate, we wish a very Merry Christmas to our amazing parents and families. May your holiday season be filled with joy and your new year with peace and happiness.

We are truly excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for our students and our school community. Let us continue working together to make this school year a memorable and enriching experience for all. Wishing you and your family a wonderful remainder of the school year filled with growth, learning, and success.

Accountability & Testing December 25

Louisiana’s School Performance Score (SPS) provides families and educators with a snapshot of how schools are performing, combining student achievement, growth, graduation rates, and college/career readiness. While SPS is important, consistent growth shows that instruction is meeting the needs of all learners. Beginning in 2025–2026, the new Grow. Achieve. Thrive. accountability model will measure schools on student growth, achievement, and readiness for life beyond graduation. Parents can support success by using resources like the Family Support Toolbox, LEAP Practice Tests, and Khan Academy.

Accountability Department

Understanding School Performance Scores and What They Mean for Our Community

Angela C.Robinson - Director of Accountability

As part of Louisiana’s accountability system, every public school receives a School Performance Score (SPS) each year. The SPS provides a snapshot of how well a school is serving its students academically, combining measures such as student achievement on state assessments, academic growth, graduation rates, and participation in college- and career-ready programs. This score helps families, educators, and community members understand both student performance and school progress.

While SPS is an important indicator, it’s only one part of the story. Growth measures show how much students are improving over time, regardless of their starting point. High achievement matters, but consistent growth demonstrates that instruction is meeting the needs of all learners. By considering both achievement and growth, SPS offers a fuller picture of how our school supports every student’s success.

What’s Changing Next Year?

Beginning in 2025–2026, Louisiana will implement the Grow. Achieve. Thrive. accountability model. This new system will measure schools across three key areas:

  • Student Growth – How much progress students make year over year

  • Achievement – Performance on LEAP and other state assessments

  • Readiness – Indicators of college, career, and life readiness

These changes emphasize preparing students for success beyond graduation while maintaining strong academic foundations. Learn more about the new accountability model here.

Helping Your Child Succeed on LEAP 2025

Parents play a vital role in supporting academic success. Here are some helpful resources:

If you have questions about our school’s SPS or how it is calculated, please contact Angela Carter-Robinson at angela_robinson@sulabschool.com or call 225-771-5249.

Upcoming Middle-of-Year Literacy and Numeracy Screeners: K–3 Students

As we approach the middle of the school year, K–3 students will begin taking the Middle-of-Year (MOY) Literacy and Numeracy Screeners. These assessments help teachers track each child’s progress toward end-of-year learning goals and ensure students are on track for academic success.

The DIBELS literacy screener measures early reading skills, including letter naming, phonemic awareness, decoding nonsense words, and oral reading fluency. The Numeracy Screener assesses key math skills such as number recognition, counting, addition and subtraction, and understanding number relationships. Both screeners are administered individually to provide an accurate view of each student’s growth.

Important for 3rd Grade Families: Louisiana requires students to score above the "Well Below" level on the end-of-year literacy screener to be promoted to 4th grade. Students have three opportunities to meet this standard: April, end of May, and after optional summer learning. Students who do not meet the benchmark may be retained.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child’s learning. Encourage reading at home and practicing basic math skills to reinforce classroom learning. For questions, contact Angela Carter-Robinson at angela_robinson@sulabschool.com or 771-5249.

PSAT Score Reports

We are pleased to share that PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT score reports have now been distributed to students. These assessments, provided by the College Board, are valuable tools that help measure students’ college and career readiness and provide insight into their academic strengths and areas for growth.

PSAT scores are diagnostic tools, not final grades or admissions criteria. They can help identify academic strengths and areas for improvement, inform future course selection, and provide early insight into college readiness and potential career pathways.

For 10th and 11th graders, PSAT/NMSQT scores also serve as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic recognition and scholarship opportunity for top performers nationwide.

Here are some next steps to get the most out of your student’s PSAT Scores-

  1. Review the Report Together: Sit down with your student to discuss their strengths and opportunities for growth.

  2. Set Goals: Use the score data to plan for improvement before the next testing opportunity.

  3. Use Resources: Encourage your student to log in to their College Board account to view their full online report, access skills feedback, and start personalized practice at https://www.khanacademy.org/sat.

  4. Plan Ahead: Students who continue to engage in targeted practice often show meaningful growth from one assessment to the next.

️ Voices Rising: Young Debaters Step Into Leadership

The Southern University Laboratory School Speech & Debate Club officially launched its first meeting on October 28, welcoming eager 4th–8th grade students to an exciting season of learning, collaboration, and growth. Students quickly demonstrated tremendous school pride—especially during a lively activity where they practiced responding to claims such as “Southern Laboratory School sucks!”, “Homework should be banned,” and “Recess should belonger.”

️ The Southern University Laboratory School Speech & Debate Club officially launched its first meeting on October 28, welcoming eager 4th–8th grade students to an exciting season of learning, collaboration, and growth. Students quickly demonstrated tremendous school pride—especially during a lively activity where they practiced responding to claims such as “Southern Laboratory School sucks!”, “Homework should be banned,” and “Recess should belonger.”

Our proud Kittens delivered such strong rebuttals to “Southern Lab sucks!” that they left our debate coach, Ms. Kina Reed, momentarily speechless. Go, Kittens! These fun yet meaningful lessons are helping scholars build the skills they need to become effective public speakers, strong thinkers, and confident debaters.

This fall, club members are participating in six interactive sessions designed to build confidence, sharpen communication, and strengthen critical thinking. Each Tuesday session focuses on concept development and skill-building, while Saturday workshops offer extended opportunities for practice, teamwork, and performance. Every meeting concludes with a brief “Reflection Round,” giving students time to think deeply about what they’ve learned and how they’re growing as developing leaders and communicators.

So far, students have:

● Explored the foundations of debate, learning key terms such as resolution, affirmative, and negative, and establishing community agreements for respectful discussion.

● Practiced building strong arguments using the Toulmin Model through interactive games and group challenges

● Taken on affirmative and negative roles in mini-debates like “Homework should be banned,” gaining confidence in speaking from multiple perspectives.

As the semester continues, students will refine their debate cases, practice persuasive delivery, and receive peer and coach feedback during practice rounds.

The program will conclude with a Debate Showcase and Mini Tournament on Saturday, December 13, where students will demonstrate their new skills for family members, guests, and the greater Kitten Family. The celebration will include student performances, reflection, and light refreshments.

Special Thanks

The SULS community extends heartfelt thanks to Ms. Kina Reed and Mrs. Frankie Robertson, 2 club founders and co-leads, and Ms. Lakosha Pooler, faculty sponsor, for their dedication, energy, and commitment to empowering our young debaters.

The Speech & Debate Club is about more than arguments; it’s about thinking critically, listening respectfully, and speaking with confidence. We can’t wait to see our Kittens shine at the showcase!

Southern University Laboratory School and LHSC Team Up to Promote Seat-Belt Safety During Bayou Classic Weekend

Here is a polished blog excerpt tailored for sulabschool.com:

Southern University Laboratory School is proud to partner with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission in launching a dynamic student-led seat-belt safety campaign ahead of the 2024 Bayou Classic. Our SULS Cheer Team created an energetic and inspiring safety video reminding all Louisiana travelers to “Buckle Up—Every Trip, Every Time.” As families and fans make their way to New Orleans for the big game, this collaboration highlights the power of student voices in promoting safer roads and stronger communities.

In a powerful and inspiring collaboration, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) has partnered with Southern University Laboratory School (SULS) to launch a seat-belt safety campaign just in time for Bayou Classic weekend. The effort, titled “Seat Belts Look Good On You,” centers on a dynamic video produced by the SULS cheerleaders to encourage safe travel for all Louisiana residents. (Yahoo)

Why This Partnership Matters

Road safety is a serious concern in Louisiana, where data shows that seat-belt usage is improving but still lags behind the national average. (lahighwaysafety.org) LHSC’s collaboration with SULS is strategic: by engaging young leaders, the campaign brings energy, creativity, and authenticity to a message that could save lives. (Yahoo)

Students Leading the Way

The SULS cheerleaders didn’t just lend their voices—they crafted a cheer video that drives the message home with heart and school spirit. Their performance will be featured in the campaign kickoff at a press event, where LHSC and SULS will officially roll out the commercial. (Yahoo)

A Timely Call to Action

The Bayou Classic weekend typically draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to New Orleans. With heavy travel expected, this public safety push is especially vital. (Yahoo) LHSC and SULS are urging everyone making the trip—whether traveling by car, bus, or van—to make a simple but life-saving choice: buckle up, every seat, every time.

Building Safer Habits

This campaign isn’t just about one weekend. It’s part of LHSC’s larger mission to improve occupant protection across the state. By embedding safety messages in culturally resonant moments—like Bayou Classic—the partnership aims to build stronger, long-term safety habits. (nhtsa.gov)

Celebrating Excellence: Anwar McKenney Jr. and Brock Dukes Shine at the 2025 Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition

Congratulations to Anwar McKenney Jr. and Brock Dukes, who placed 1st and 4th at the 2025 Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition. These outstanding students will advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C.! Both students showcased exceptional advocacy skills while tackling complex Fourth Amendment issues. We are proud of their achievements and excited for what’s ahead!

Southern University Laboratory School is proud to celebrate two outstanding scholars, Anwar McKenney Jr. and Brock Dukes, for their exceptional performance at the 2025 Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition. This prestigious event challenges high school students to argue complex constitutional issues before panels of legal professionals, fostering critical thinking, advocacy skills, and a deep understanding of the law.

This year’s moot court problem centered on the Fourth Amendment—specifically, whether a student’s right to privacy was violated when school officials and a School Resource Officer searched her cell phone without a warrant. The case raised timely questions about balancing student privacy rights with school safety policies in an era of digital technology. Competitors were tasked with analyzing landmark cases such as New Jersey v. T.L.O., Riley v. California, and Schneckloth v. Bustamonte, applying these precedents to a fictional scenario involving alleged threats, social media posts, and zero-tolerance policies.

Against this challenging backdrop, Anwar & Brock delivered a stellar performance, earning 1st and 4th place overall. Their commanding presence, persuasive arguments, and mastery of constitutional principles secured the opportunity to represent Louisiana in Washington, D.C. at the national Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition. This achievement reflects not only their dedication but also their ability to think critically and advocate effectively on issues that impact students nationwide.

We commend Anwar and Brock for their hard work, preparation, and commitment to excellence. Their success underscores the importance of programs that empower students to engage with real-world legal issues and develop leadership skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Congratulations, Anwar and Brock—you have made SULS proud! We look forward to cheering both of you as they compete on the national stage in Washington, D.C.

Southern Lab Sophomore Captures National Spotlight with Iconic Shot

Southern Lab sophomore Kalen Williams recently earned national recognition when the NCAA’s official FCS account selected one of his game-day photos as a Top Pic of the Week. Capturing Southern University’s matchup against Jackson State, Kalen’s photo of running back Trey Holly in action showcased his growing talent and passion for photography. Balancing academics with creative pursuits, Kalen continues to make his mark both behind the camera and in the classroom—proving that excellence at SULS comes in many forms.

Baton Rouge, La. — Southern Lab sophomore Kalen Williams found himself on a stage few high school students ever reach this past week, when the NCAA’s official FCS account featured one of his photographs as one of its Top Pics of the Week.

Williams, who has developed a growing passion for photography, was on the sidelines at Southern University’s matchup against Jackson State, capturing the energy and intensity of the storied rivalry. His lens froze a defining moment: Southern running back Trey Holly cutting through the defense, a shot that perfectly blended motion, emotion, and artistry.

“It was surreal,” Williams said of seeing his photo showcased nationally. “I was just focused on capturing the game the best I could, and to see my work recognized on that level is a blessing. It motivates me to keep pushing and getting better.”

For Williams, the recognition is bigger than just a single snapshot. As a student at Southern University Laboratory School, he’s been honing his craft with every opportunity—shooting practices, games, and events, all while balancing his schoolwork. His work ethic and eye for detail have quickly made him a familiar presence at Southern sporting events.

The moment also highlights the opportunities opening up for young creatives in Baton Rouge. Williams’ photo not only shined a light on Trey Holly’s on-field performance, but also on the emerging talent working behind the camera.

“This is only the beginning,” Williams added. “I want to keep telling stories through my photos, capturing moments people can remember forever.”

As Southern Lab’s own continues to develop his skills, his latest recognition by the NCAA suggests his work is already resonating far beyond Baton Rouge.

SUBR/SULS Power Outage

We want to inform you that Southern University Laboratory School is currently experiencing a partial power outage, with approximately half of the campus without electricity. Please rest assured that all students are safe and are handling the situation with the resilience and grace we’ve come to expect from our Kittens.

University personnel are actively working to restore power as quickly as possible. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure student comfort, parents may begin the process of picking up their children. Staff will be on hand to assist with a smooth and orderly dismissal.

After care with YES Academy will not take place today.
