Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is there a waiting list at Southern University Laboratory School? SULS does not maintain a “waiting list” for K through 12th grade?   All applicants are notified of admission status once the committee reviews the application.  If additional information is required, the applicant will be notified by the committee. If a student does not accept his/her position with Southern University Laboratory School, the selection committee may select another student from the pool of applicants.  As such, we encourage parents of applicants to ensure contact information is current throughout the year of application. Any changes should be emailed to info@sulabschool.com.  Once that seat is forfeited, an applicant who decides to pursue admittance again has to reapply and go through the application process.

  2. What is the cutoff date for entering Pre-K and K? If a student turns 4 years old on or before September 30, he/she will be considered for Pre-K4.  For admittance in Kindergarten, students must turn 5 years old on or before September 30.

  3. Do you accept students during the school year? Occasionally, student attrition does occur during a school year, and in such cases, a student from the pool of applicants for that academic year may be selected to fill that open spot. This is not a guarantee.

  4. Who makes the decision for acceptance into Southern University Laboratory School? Applicants are selected for admission by a selection committee consisting of a representative selected by the Director, school counselor, and representatives from the faculty and staff.

  5. Does Southern University Laboratory School offer financial aid/scholarships? Tuition assistance is available to qualified students on a limited basis. Applications for financial assistance are made available after the student is accepted.

Southern University Laboratory School does not award athletic scholarships of any kind. Staff members of SULS/Southern University are not authorized to award and/or guarantee scholarships or financial awards of any kind. Additionally, SULS does not award partial scholarships. All applicants must follow the complete process to be eligible.

  6. Does the Laboratory School provide transportation? The Laboratory School does not provide transportation to and from school. It is the responsibility of parents to arrange for timely drop off and pick up of their children from school each day.

  7. What time does school start and end? Start Time: 7:45 am End Time: 3:10 pm

  8. What is the Student/Teacher Ratio at SULS? average class size in Pre-K is approximately 20 students with 1 teacher and a teacher’s aid.  Our elementary department K to 2nd grade has approximately 13 students per class with 1 instructor all day.  Grades 3 through 5, are departmentalized where they rotate per subject area (math, ELA, science, social studies, ancillary).  Those class sizes average 15 students to 1 teacher.   Lastly, our high school class sizes are approximately 17 students with 1 instructor.  Overall, the student teacher ratio is smaller than most which is ideal in building a positive learning environment where all students grow academically, emotionally, and socially.
