Middle School

Southern University Laboratory School’s Middle School Department is committed to meeting the needs of the “whole” student. The middle school years of a child are essential to the emotional, social, and mental development of a child; therefore, we pride ourselves on having a great relationship with all of our students collectively and individually.  Through a period-based, departmentalized structure, our teachers collaborate within the school and across content areas to design and implement different learning experiences. Through robust and rigorous curricula  aligned with Louisiana State Standards our students are  exposed to rigorous materials and skills needed to prepare them for standardized testing (LEAP 2025, ASPIRE, etc.) in addition to gaining skills in character development and organization.

With 1:1 technology, our teachers are able to expand student knowledge and make real-life connections that  nurture them as global citizens, and are also significant and relevant to our students, community, and world.

In a safe nurturing environment, our middle school department intentionally prepares students for high school, affording them the opportunity to earn high school credits in ELA, Algebra and art classes.  Students are also encouraged to participate in several extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports that help build social skills, team building skills, self-esteem and overall confidence as they discover their interests and talents.  Students engage in field trips that enhance learning by exposing them to real-life and authentic experiences.

In addition to cultivating a strong academic foundation, our middle school team works to encourage and motivate students to develop strong leadership skills that heighten their levels of  accountability and responsibility as they become lifelong learners in an ever changing world.
