Making Waves in Water Safety: SULS Partners with YMCA for Year Two of Swim Lessons

At Southern University Laboratory School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom—and sometimes, it even happens in the pool.

Now in our second year, we are proud to continue our partnership with the YMCA of the Capital Area to provide comprehensive swimming and water safety lessons for our Elementary and Middle School students. This collaborative effort reflects our unwavering commitment to student safety, health, and lifelong learning.

Through this program, nearly 200 students from Kindergarten through 8th grade will participate in structured, no-cost swim lessons during the school day. The goal is not just to teach students how to swim, but to empower them with the skills and confidence needed to stay safe around water—a vital life skill that can save lives.

This initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of funders who share our passion for promoting equity in access to health and wellness resources. Because of their support, every child, regardless of background, can benefit from this life-enhancing opportunity.

More than just a PE activity, our swim program is a strategic investment in prevention, safety, and student development. We’re incredibly excited to see its continued impact—boosting student confidence, encouraging physical fitness, and reducing the risks associated with water-related accidents.

Stay tuned—schedules will be posted soon, and we can’t wait to see our Kittens making waves this season!
