Summer Newsletter 2024

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Southern University Laboratory School! We're thrilled to welcome back returning students and extend a warm greeting to new families joining us. Exciting changes include significant campus renovations, a shift to block scheduling for middle school, and enhanced communication tools to keep everyone informed and engaged.

Back to School Welcome Letter

Dear Southern University Laboratory School Families,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I am thrilled to welcome back our returning students and extend a warm welcome to our new students and families joining us this year. Your SULS Family hope you had a wonderful summer filled with relaxation, adventure, and cherished memories. As we prepare to embark on this new academic journey, we wanted to extend our warmest greetings and share our anticipation for all the amazing experiences that lie ahead.

Throughout the past few months, our dedicated team has been working diligently to ensure that everything is ready for your return. Our school is slowing going through a transformation as we are pleased to inform you that we are undertaking significant renovations across our school campus. These improvements include updates to our restrooms, windows, lighting, walkways, and various other facilities. These changes are designed to enhance the learning environment and ensure our students have access to modern, safe, and comfortable spaces.

At our school, we believe that education is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about fostering a love for learning. Our highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers are passionate about their subjects and are dedicated to creating an environment where curiosity and intellectual growth flourish.

As we prepare for an exciting and productive year ahead, I want to share some important updates and information with you.

Middle School Block Scheduling

This year, our middle school will be shifting to block scheduling. Students will now have four 90-minute classes each day. Within these blocks, students will attend math and English classes every day. They will visit their Social Studies, Science, P.E. and elective every other day.  This change aims to provide deeper learning opportunities and a more focused instructional approach. Migrating to block scheduling will also reduce the number of transitions for middle school students.

Open House/Orientation

We are excited to invite you to our Open House/Orientation on Monday, August 5, 2024, starting at 9:00 am. Due to our ongoing renovations, the event will be held at the F.G. Clark Activity Center (Mini Dome). This orientation is a crucial opportunity for you to meet teachers, learn about the upcoming school year, and understand our expectations and goals. Students will receive their schedules and be allowed to turn in pertinent information relative to the start of school.

Communication and Email Updates

Effective communication between school and home is essential. Therefore, we urge all parents to ensure we have up-to-date and accurate email addresses. Our school utilizes Google Classroom as its learning management system. Soon, students will receive invitations to join their respective Google Classroom cohorts. Once students accept these invitations, parents will also receive invitations. It is vital for parents to accept these invitations to stay informed about assignments and other important information.

Student Attendance

Consistent attendance is critical for academic success. Students must attend school regularly, arrive on time, and be present for the full instructional day. Students can be dropped off at 7:30 AM and class begins promptly at 7:50 AM. According to the Compulsory Attendance Law, elementary students must attend a minimum of 167 days per school year, and middle and high school students must attend a minimum of 81 days per semester or 162 days per school year.

Southern University Laboratory School, in collaboration with the PTO, has partnered with The Printing Source to streamline the uniform purchasing experience for our families. Starting this year, uniforms will be ordered online via the https://mytshirtquote.com/sulab/shop/home website.

Dear Parents,

As we gear up for the 2024-2025 school year, we are excited to announce the launch of our new uniform ordering process. Southern University Laboratory School, in collaboration with the PTO, has partnered with The Printing Source to streamline the uniform purchasing experience for our families.

In previous years, the Kitten Store has efficiently handled our uniform orders. However, as our school continues to grow, the volunteer-run Kitten Store has reached its capacity. Therefore, we have decided to transition our uniform ordering process to The Printing Source to better accommodate our expanding school community.

Starting this year, uniforms will be ordered online via the https://mytshirtquote.com/sulab/shop/home website. We believe that this partnership will provide an efficient and convenient way for parents to purchase uniforms for their children.

To assist you with any questions you may have regarding the uniform ordering process, we have attached a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheet to this email. Please take a moment to review it, and feel free to reach out if you need further clarification.

Thank you for your cooperation and support as we implement these changes to enhance the uniform purchasing experience for our school community.

Sincerely,

Herman R. Brister

Exploring Art and Culture: Southern University Laboratory School Visits the New Orleans Art Museum

Recently, the students of Southern University Laboratory School embarked on an enriching journey to explore the vibrant art culture of New Orleans at the esteemed New Orleans Art Museum (NOMA).

Founded on December 16, 1911, with just nine works of art, NOMA has since evolved into a renowned institution boasting an impressive permanent collection of nearly 50,000 artworks. With extraordinary strengths in French and American art, photography, glass, and African and Japanese works, NOMA stands as one of the premier art museums in the South.

During their visit, our students had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich artistic heritage of New Orleans firsthand. From iconic masterpieces to contemporary creations, they were able to appreciate and examine a diverse array of artworks, gaining valuable insights into the cultural tapestry of the city.

As they roamed through the museum's halls, our students were captivated by the beauty and significance of each piece, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts and igniting their creativity. The experience not only broadened their artistic horizons but also encouraged them to embrace the diverse perspectives and expressions showcased within the museum's walls.

At Southern University Laboratory School, we believe in the power of experiential learning to inspire and educate our students. Our visit to NOMA exemplifies our commitment to providing enriching opportunities that broaden their minds and enrich their lives.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to NOMA for opening its doors to our students and allowing them to embark on this unforgettable artistic journey. As we continue to nurture the next generation of thinkers, creators, and innovators, we look forward to many more opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates and adventures from Southern University Laboratory School! Thank you Ms. June for enlightening our students with this experience.

Exploring the Legal World: A Day at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse

Witnessing Justice in Action

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – The students of Southern University Laboratory School’s Law Studies program recently embarked on an eye-opening journey into the heart of the legal system. Their destination? The 19th Judicial District Courthouse, where they had the unique opportunity to witness a mock sentencing hearing firsthand.

Criminal Law in Practice

As part of the Law Studies curriculum, these aspiring legal minds delved into the intricacies of Criminal Law. The classroom discussions and textbook readings came alive as they stepped into the 19th JCD.

The highlight of the day was the mock sentencing hearing. Led by Judge Wilson Fields, a respected figure in the legal community, the students observed the proceedings with rapt attention. Judge Field presided over the courtroom, ensuring that justice was served—even if it was a simulated case.

The students actively participated. They were encouraged to ask questions, seek clarification, and engage in discussions with the legal professionals present. Attorneys at law generously shared insights, demystifying legal jargon and shedding light on the nuances of the process.

From Classroom to Courtroom

For these young minds, the visit was more than an educational field trip. It was a bridge between theory and practice. They witnessed the gravity of decisions made within those walls—the impact on lives, families, and communities. The mock hearing allowed them to connect the dots between their textbooks and the real-world application of legal principles.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the students filed out of the courthouse, their minds buzzed with questions and reflections. Some envisioned themselves in the judge’s seat, while others saw themselves advocating for justice as attorneys. Regardless of their individual paths, one thing was clear: the 19th Judicial District Courthouse had left an indelible mark on their legal aspirations.

The Law Studies program, under the guidance of Mr.  Jacob Davis and Professor Russell Jones, continues to nurture these future legal minds. Their visit to the courthouse was not just a field trip; it was a glimpse into their future roles as guardians of justice.

Let's embrace this fresh beginning with enthusiasm, setting goals, pursuing dreams, and striving for excellence together. February marks Black History Month, a time to honor and reflect on the significant contributions of African Americans. Our school is proud to celebrate this heritage and will host various events throughout the month to educate and empower our students. We're excited to welcome our new guidance counselors, Mrs. Lasonia Brown and Mrs. Shanta McCall, who bring invaluable experience and dedication to our team. As we prepare for the year ahead, let's stay focused on academic success, with LEAP2025 and ACT exams approaching. Lastly, as we gear up for Mardi Gras celebrations, let's enjoy responsibly and embrace the rich cultural heritage that makes Louisiana unique. Together, let's make 2024 a year of growth, learning, and achievement at SULS!

From the Desk of the Director

Happy New Year to Our SULS Family!

I am confident that together, we will make 2024 a year to remember at Southern University Laboratory School.

SULS Celebrates Black History Month

As we embark on the month of February, I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a happy Black History Month. This month is not only a time to honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history but also a time to reflect on the rich cultural heritage that shapes our community and nation.

Southern University Laboratory School is proud to be part of the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) system in the country. As such, we recognize the importance of celebrating and preserving the culture and legacy of the Southern University System.

Throughout the month, our school will be hosting various events and activities to commemorate Black History Month. These events will provide opportunities for our students to learn about the significant milestones, accomplishments, and struggles of African Americans, both past, and present.

It is essential that we continue to educate and empower our students to embrace their cultural heritage and understand the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society. By celebrating Black History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.

I encourage all members of our school community to participate in our Black History Month celebrations and take this opportunity to learn, reflect, and honor the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and progress.

To support our students' readiness for these assessments, our dedicated teachers have begun incorporating ACT and LEAP-like questions into their classroom routines. Additionally, we will be providing information soon regarding parent involvement in writing notes and our annual collection of snacks for testing

In observance of this festive occasion, the school will be closed from Monday, February 12 through Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Classes will resume on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

Whether you're participating in parades, enjoying delicious king cake, or spending time with loved ones, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras holiday.

During this time, I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the rich cultural heritage and traditions that make Mardi Gras such a special celebration in Louisiana. It's an opportunity for us to come together as a community and celebrate the vibrant diversity that makes our state unique.

As always, the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We encourage everyone to exercise caution and follow any guidelines or recommendations from local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras celebration.

Pre-ACT Information (8th Grade Students)

Greetings Kitten Family!

As we continue to guide our students toward a successful academic future, I am excited to highlight a valuable opportunity that can significantly impact their journey – the Pre-ACT.

The Pre-ACT is a standardized test designed to assess and prepare students for their transition to higher education. It provides an early assessment of your child's academic strengths and areas for improvement while also identifying these areas early on allows for targeted support and preparation for future academic challenges.

This test is specifically crafted to measure college and career readiness for students in 8th grade. Following the exam, students will receive a score report that identifies areas of strength and opportunities as well as a predicted ACT composite score. The cost of the assessment is $16.00. It will be administered on March 13, 2024. Testing will begin at 8:30 AM.  We are asking that students report to school on time so that we can begin on time. More information will be sent home closer to the test date.  You can pay for the exam online via the school app or stop by the front office.

Taking the Pre-ACT is an investment in your child’s academic success. We are strongly encouraging all families to take advantage of this great opportunity.

We look forward to the great day and are eager to see how great our students will perform. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Angela Carter-Robinson.

Sincerely,

Angela Carter-Robinson

Register for the Pre-ACT 8

ACT for 9th Grade Students

Greetings Kitten Family!

We are excited to announce that  ALL ninth-grade students will take the ACT on March 13, 2024, at Southern University Laboratory School along with the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth-grade students. The ACT has long been recognized as one of the leading college entrance exams in the country and is accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United States. In addition, by taking the ACT, Southern University Laboratory School students can have scores sent directly to colleges and universities and make themselves visible to scholarship agencies.

The ACT is a standardized test that assesses students' academic readiness for college and is a crucial component of the college admissions process. Our goal at Southern Lab is to provide multiple opportunities for our students to take the ACT before they graduate as studies have shown that students with repeated score attempts average 2.9 points higher than single testers.

All students will take the  ACT online. The online version of the ACT consists of the same four multiple-choice subtests as the paper version; English, mathematics, reading, and science. The online version also contains the same content, number of items and timing.

Testing will begin at 8:30 AM.  We are asking that students report to school on time so that we can begin on time. More information will be sent home closer to the test date.

We look forward to the great day and are eager to see how amazing our students will perform. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Angela Carter-Robinson.

Sincerely,

Angela Carter-Robinson

Director of School Accountability
