From the Desk of the Director
Happy New Year to Our SULS Family!
As we embark on this new year, I extend my warmest wishes to all students, parents, and stakeholders of Southern University Laboratory School. May 2024 bring you joy, success, and fulfillment in all your endeavors. We are looking forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences.
The start of a new year marks a fresh beginning and presents us with exciting new opportunities to embrace. It is a time to set goals, pursue dreams, and strive for excellence in all that we do. I am confident that together, we will make 2024 a year to remember at Southern University Laboratory School.
SULS Celebrates Black History Month
As we embark on the month of February, I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a happy Black History Month. This month is not only a time to honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history but also a time to reflect on the rich cultural heritage that shapes our community and nation.
Southern University Laboratory School is proud to be part of the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) system in the country. As such, we recognize the importance of celebrating and preserving the culture and legacy of the Southern University System.
Throughout the month, our school will be hosting various events and activities to commemorate Black History Month. These events will provide opportunities for our students to learn about the significant milestones, accomplishments, and struggles of African Americans, both past, and present.
It is essential that we continue to educate and empower our students to embrace their cultural heritage and understand the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society. By celebrating Black History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.
I encourage all members of our school community to participate in our Black History Month celebrations and take this opportunity to learn, reflect, and honor the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and progress.
Thank you for your continued support as we celebrate Black History Month and continue to uphold the values of diversity, equity, and excellence at Southern University Laboratory School.
Welcoming Our New Guidance Counselors
I am thrilled to introduce our two new guidance counselors, Lasonia Brown and Shanta McCall, who have joined our dedicated team. With their wealth of experience and commitment to student success, I am confident they will make valuable contributions to our school community.
In an effort to provide personalized support to our students, Mrs. McCall will be assisting students with last names A-J, while Mrs. Brown will be supporting students with last names K-Z. You can reach them via email at Shanta_McCall@sulabschool.com and Lasonia_Brown@sulabschool.com or by the link provided under the counselors’ corner section.
Preparation for the Year Ahead
As we enter the new school calendar year, it's essential to keep our focus on academic success and preparation. We are approximately 45 days away from the LEAP2025 exams, with the ACT exams following shortly thereafter in just over 100 days.
To support our students' readiness for these assessments, our dedicated teachers have begun incorporating ACT and LEAP-like questions into their classroom routines. Additionally, we will be providing information soon regarding parent involvement in writing notes and our annual collection of snacks for testing
SULS Celebrates Mardi Gras
As we prepare for the month of February, I want to remind everyone that Southern University Laboratory School will be celebrating Mardi Gras. In observance of this festive occasion, the school will be closed from Monday, February 12 through Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Classes will resume on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Mardi Gras is a time-honored tradition in our community, and we encourage our students and families to enjoy this festive season responsibly. Whether you're participating in parades, enjoying delicious king cake, or spending time with loved ones, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras holiday.
During this time, I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the rich cultural heritage and traditions that make Mardi Gras such a special celebration in Louisiana. It's an opportunity for us to come together as a community and celebrate the vibrant diversity that makes our state unique.
As always, the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We encourage everyone to exercise caution and follow any guidelines or recommendations from local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras celebration.
We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Stay Connected
As we navigate the year ahead, communication and collaboration between home and school remain essential. I encourage all parents and stakeholders to stay engaged with our school community through our various communication channels.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we work together to empower our students to achieve their full potential. If you are not receiving weekly call outs please contact Mrs. Augustus in the front office to update your information.
