Middle & High School Programs: February 24

At Southern University Laboratory School (SULS), February brings exciting initiatives. Our students are deeply engaged with the Zearn math program, which has shown remarkable results in improving math proficiency through visual models and real-life examples. Parents, please ensure your child completes their weekly Zearn math homework, aiming for three on-grade level lessons per week to earn incentives. As we celebrate Black History Month, we've organized daily tributes to honor African American contributions, with Mrs. Sherrard leading the initiative. Social studies teachers can collaborate to select students for announcements, coordinated by Mrs. Square for elementary participation. For any inquiries, reach out to Mrs. Sherrard.

Dear Middle and High School Students,

I hope this message finds you well as we dive into the exciting happenings at Southern University Laboratory School (SULS) for the month of February. Let's explore some of the engaging activities and initiatives that await us.

SULS Middle School Students Of The Month

We would like to say congratulations to the middle school students who have earned middle school of the month. Taylor Morgan,  Addisyn Lagarde,  Jayden Domineck

Zearn Math Program

Our elementary and middle school students have been actively engaged with the Zearn math program, and the results have been remarkable. Zearn transforms the way students approach math, making it more comprehensible through visual models, pictures, and real-life examples. Research indicates significant gains in math proficiency for students using Zearn, even those starting at lower levels.

Parents, we encourage you to remind your child to complete their weekly Zearn math homework. Students are expected to finish a minimum of three on-grade-level lessons per week. Incentives, such as free dress days and other awards, await those who meet this target. For additional guidance, please refer to this parent tip sheet to support your child's success.

Black History Month Celebrations

February marks the celebration of Black History Month, and we are excited to honor the rich contributions of African Americans throughout history. To make this celebration inclusive, we've divided participation among the school days. Mrs. Sherrard will share the names of notable figures we'll highlight each day. Social studies teachers are invited to collaborate and select middle and high school students to make these announcements. Mrs. Square will coordinate with elementary teachers for their participation. Should you need assistance or have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Sherrard.

Celebrating the Legacy of Garrett A. Morgan at Southern University Laboratory School

Southern University Laboratory School is proud to announce our partnership with The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Garrett A. Morgan.

A century ago, the world of traffic intersections was much simpler, with only two options: stop and go. However, after witnessing a tragic collision between a horse-drawn carriage and a car, inventor Garrett Morgan envisioned a safer alternative: caution.

Morgan's innovative solution was a new traffic signal that introduced a third "caution" arm to the existing two-arm "stop and go" signals. Shaped like a lowercase T, his apparatus revolutionized traffic control by providing drivers with an essential warning signal. Over time, the caution light evolved into the familiar yellow traffic light, offering crucial extra seconds that have since been credited with saving countless lives.

What makes Morgan's invention even more remarkable is the fact that he was African American, facing significant challenges in a field predominantly dominated by White men such as Edison and Bell. Despite these obstacles, Morgan's groundbreaking contribution to traffic safety has left an indelible mark on society.

As we honor the legacy of Garrett A. Morgan, we recognize the importance of innovation and diversity in shaping our world. Through education and celebration, Southern University Laboratory School remains committed to promoting inclusivity and honoring the contributions of individuals from all backgrounds.

Southern University Laboratory School Visual Arts Department Newsletter

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates from the Visual Arts Department at Southern University Laboratory School!

Parade Float Decorations:

Our talented students recently showcased their creativity by designing and decorating parade floats for the Queen, Mrs. Terrica Williams. Embracing the captivating theme of "Scotlandville Royalty," our students brought their artistic vision to life, adding vibrant colors and intricate details to the floats.

Exploring Andy Warhol:

In addition to their work on parade floats, our students have been delving into the world of Andy Warhol, an iconic American visual artist and leading figure in the pop art movement. Through studying Warhol's techniques and style, students have been inspired to create their own pop art masterpieces, including designing tennis shoes, hand art, and more.

Field Trip to Creative Xpressions:

To further enhance their artistic experiences, our students will be embarking on a field trip to Creative Xpressions this month. This exciting outing will immerse students in the vibrant celebration of Mardi Gras and its rich history. Through interactive activities and engaging exhibits, students will gain valuable insights into the cultural significance of Mardi Gras and its impact on our community.

We are immensely proud of the dedication and creativity demonstrated by our students in the Visual Arts Department. Their passion for artistic expression continues to inspire us all.

Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming events from the Visual Arts Department at Southern University Laboratory School!

Pre ACT Information

Greetings Kitten Family!

As we continue to guide our students toward a successful academic future, I am excited to highlight a valuable opportunity that can significantly impact their journey – the Pre-ACT.

The Pre-ACT is a standardized test designed to assess and prepare students for their transition to higher education. It provides an early assessment of your child's academic strengths and areas for improvement while also identifying these areas early on and allows for targeted support and preparation for future academic challenges.

This test is specifically crafted to measure college and career readiness for students in 8th grade. Following the exam, students will receive a score report that identifies areas of strength and opportunities as well as a predicted ACT composite score. The cost of the assessment is $16.00. It will be administered on March 13, 2024. Testing will begin at 8:30 AM.  We are asking that students report to school on time so that we can begin on time. More information will be sent home closer to the test date.  You can pay for the exam online via the school app or stop by the front office.

Taking the Pre-ACT is an investment in your child’s academic success. We are strongly encouraging all families to take advantage of this great opportunity.

We look forward to the great day and are eager to see how great our students will perform. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Angela Carter-Robinson.

Register for the Pre-ACT 8

Sincerely,

Angela Carter-Robinson

NAEP

Southern University Lab School’s 8th grade students will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education.

NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. Your child may take a mathematics or reading assessment.

More information about NAEP survey questions is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section "What Questions Are on the Test?" The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, which includes transition time, directions, and completion of survey questions. The information collected is used for statistical purposes only. Your child's grades will not be affected.

Dual Enrollment

Southern University Laboratory School’s Dual Enrollment program is growing. This semester there are 49 ninth- twelfth grade students enrolled in dual enrollment courses at Southern University Baton Rouge and/or Southern University Shreveport.  We are exited as we watch the increase in student participation and enthusiasm for this amazing opportunity.

The Dual Enrollment and Proces Technology programs allows students to earn college credits while they are sill in high school. This fast -paced, academic challenge helps students transition seamlessly into a college setting. In addition it allows students to accumulate credit hours prior to entering college, saving money on college tuition.

SULS Kittens Engage in EBRP Library Book Mobile

We are delighted to continue our partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. In February, our K-5 students had the opportunity to check out books from the Bookmobile, while our PreKindergarten students enjoyed Storytime sessions. Next month, middle and high school students will also have the chance to explore a variety of books.

Please note that there have been recent changes in state law per ACT 436 regarding library card types for minors. Parents or legal guardians must choose from one of the four card types for their minor child by June 1, 2024, to avoid card blocking. All students are required to reapply for one of the new library cards, even those who currently have a card. Applications will be sent home this week for students to reapply, and parents must initial beside their preferred card category.

Recently, our Guidance Department has been focusing on the power of positive affirmations, especially within our Elementary Department. We believe that instilling positive thinking habits at a young age can have a profound impact on our student's overall well-being and success.

We are thrilled to see our wonderful elementary students actively engaging in this practice by starting their days with positive affirmations and thoughts. By encouraging them to speak positively to themselves, we aim to boost their self-esteem, cultivate a growth mindset, and foster resilience in the face of challenges.

As partners in your child's education and personal development, we kindly ask for your support in reinforcing this practice at home. Encourage your child to speak positive thoughts into their lives each day, whether it's in the morning, before bedtime, or during moments of self-reflection.

100 Days Smarter!

On January 31, 2024, our students celebrated the 100th Day of School with various activities across grade levels. We extend our gratitude to our teachers for providing 100 days of effective and meaningful instruction.

Black History Month Kickoff

Our First Grade students had a special kickoff for Black History Month with a gift from Ashley V. Carter, author of "Enoch’s Little Lunch: Exploring Cultural Foods During Lunchtime." Each student received a copy of the book and had the opportunity to engage with Ms. Carter during a video call. We are grateful for the support of Alexis Motley, who made this wonderful experience possible.

Krewe of Kittens

Our PreK-2nd Grade students will participate in this year’s Krewe of Kittens parade. Students and parents are invited to decorate a wagon and join the parade on Friday, February 9, 2024. Please note that students must be accompanied by an adult to participate.

Zearn It!

Girls on the Run

We are excited to announce the start of Girls on the Run, a unique after-school program designed to support the social, emotional, and physical development of girls in 3rd-8th grades. The program will begin the week of February 19, 2024.

We look forward to a month filled with learning, celebration, and community engagement at Southern University Laboratory School.

January Field Trip

2nd and 3rd grade students went on the first field trip of the Spring Semester.  The STINKY CHEESE MAN & OTHER FAIRLY STUPID TALES ‍ was presented at the Manship Theater and based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales deconstructs the tradition of the fairy tale. Characters slide in and out of tales; Cinderella rebuffs Rumpelstiltskin, and Goldilocks meets the Three Elephants. Nothing is quite the same as you remember it.  Students enjoyed the play and look forward to upcoming field trips.

Sincerely,

SULS Participates in YMCA Youth & Government Conference

Southern University Laboratory School students recently showcased their prowess at the Louisiana YMCA Youth Legislature conference, a three-day immersion into state government for high school students. Beyond textbook learning, our students actively participated in all three branches of government, engaging in passionate debates on local and state issues.

Empowering Future Leaders: Southern University Laboratory School Shines at YMCA Youth & Government Conference!

We are thrilled to announce the active participation of our students in the annual Louisiana YMCA Youth Legislature conference. This three-day event is a remarkable opportunity that immerses high school students from across the state in every aspect of state government.

Engaging All Three Branches of Government:

During the conference, our students assume roles in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, passionately debating issues of local and state importance. It's a hands-on experience that provides them with invaluable insights into the democratic process.

Leadership Development and Presiding Skills:

The Youth Legislature is a student-led conference where State Board officials are elected by their peers to plan and preside over each session. This allows our students to not only participate actively but also develop crucial leadership and presiding skills.

Diverse Perspectives, Unified Goals:

Attached is a video that beautifully captures the diversity of the conference, with our very own Southern University Laboratory School students shining in various capacities. This experience goes beyond textbooks, forcing participants to engage at the highest levels of Depth of Knowledge (DOK). They are challenged to create, explore, investigate, debate, and collaborate with fellow students from every corner of Louisiana.

Encouraging More Students to Join:

We wholeheartedly encourage more students to partake in this life-changing experience. It's not just about understanding government; it's about becoming active participants in shaping our collective future.

Let's continue fostering a new generation of leaders who are informed, passionate, and ready to make a difference! 🌐✨ #YouthLeadership #GovernmentEngagement #FutureLeaders

Southern University Laboratory School Jr. Beta Members Leave a Legacy of Service at MLK Fest 2024

Introduction:

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of service and community upliftment, the Southern University Laboratory School Junior Beta Club members recently took part in a remarkable initiative at the Martin Luther King Fest 2024. Guided by the values of unity, equality, and compassion, these students dedicated their time to make a lasting impact on the Gus Young Area community.

The Project:

Led by the enthusiastic Mr. Cain from the English department and Mrs. Vargas from Social Studies, the Jr. Beta students undertook a meaningful project that aimed to enhance recreational spaces for local youth. In a gesture that combines the spirit of service and the joy of play, the students decided to paint a playground court in the Gus Young Area.

The Painting Process:

On the day of the fest, the Jr. Beta members, armed with paintbrushes, colors, and a shared commitment to community improvement, transformed the playground into a vibrant space for children to enjoy. Their creative energy and dedication were evident as they worked diligently under the guidance of Mr. Cain and Mrs. Vargas.

The painted court, now adorned with colorful designs and positive messages, stands as a testament to the students' efforts to create a welcoming and joyful environment for the Gus Young community.

A Heartfelt Thank You:

The Southern University Laboratory School community extends a heartfelt thank you to the Jr. Beta members who participated in the Martin Luther King Fest 2024. Your dedication to service and your willingness to give back to the community align with the principles that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held dear.

Your efforts in painting the playground court not only add vibrancy to the Gus Young Area but also serve as a shining example of the positive impact young individuals can make when they come together for a shared cause.

In the spirit of Dr. King's dream, these Jr. Beta members are leaving an enduring mark on their community, embodying the belief that positive change begins with actions, both big and small.

Thank you, Beta members, for your service. May your commitment to community upliftment continue to inspire others as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of love, unity, and service.

Just In Case: Weather-Related Transition to Asynchronous Learning

As we approach the winter season, we want to ensure that you are informed and prepared for any potential weather-related disruptions to our regular school schedule. In the event that inclement weather (icy roads, heavy snow, etc.) prevents us from conducting in-person classes on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, we have established a plan to seamlessly transition to asynchronous learning to ensure the continuity of your child's education.

Subject: Important Notification: Weather-Related Transition to Asynchronous Learning

I hope this message finds you well.

Procedure for Transition to Asynchronous Learning:

  • Notification: You will be notified of any change to the school schedule via our official communication channels, including email, text messages, and our school website. Please ensure that your contact information is up-to-date to receive timely notifications.

K to 2nd Grade:

Preparation:  With potentially severe weather forecasts, the Southern University Laboratory School may need to shift to remote learning. This packet is part of our preparedness plan.  Currently, an emergency has not been declared.  We are preemptively distributing these packets to ensure continuous learning should there be a need for remote learning days due to weather-related issues or other emergencies.  These packets should only be used at home if remote learning is officially announced.

Work Completion and Attendance:  During remote learning days, students will be expected to engage with and complete the work assigned in their packets, pacing themselves appropriately across different subjects.  Once regular school activities resume, these packets should be returned to school.  Recognizing that students may face other circumstances or a lack of internet connection on a day of inclement weather, students will have three days beyond the remote learning day to complete all assignments.  All assignments must be completed and submitted for students to be counted as present during the remote learning days.

Preserve the Packet for future use:  If there is no immediate need to alter our school day schedule due to weather conditions, we ask that students keep the packet in their book bags.  This is a precautionary measure for any unforeseen emergencies that might necessitate a transition to remote learning in the future.

3rd to 12th

  • Learning Platforms: Our teachers will provide asynchronous learning materials and assignments through our designated online learning platform google classroom. These resources will be accessible to students, allowing them to continue their coursework remotely.

  • Communication Channels: Teachers will remain available for communication and support during regular school hours. Students and parents can reach out via email or other communication channels specified by the teacher for any questions or assistance.

  • Attendance and Assignments: Attendance will be recorded based on students' engagement with asynchronous materials and completion of assigned tasks. It is essential that students actively participate in the provided learning activities.

Preparing Your Child:

To ensure a smooth transition, we recommend the following:

  • Ensure that your child is familiar with the online learning platforms used by the school.

  • Establish a designated study area at home with necessary materials.

  • Encourage your child to communicate with their teachers if they have any questions or concerns.

  • Ensure that your child’s Chromebook is operable; working keys, it charges, connects to home WiFi, no damage to screen, etc.

Stay Informed:

We will keep you updated on any changes to the school schedule due to weather conditions. Please monitor the school’s app, social media (Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn) text messages, and our school website for the latest information.

Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our school office.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

Herman R. Brister

Director

November & December 23 Lab Report

The Louisiana State Department of Education released the School Performance Scores for the 22-23 school year. We are excited to announce that we have experienced growth as we have maintained our “B” rating. As we approach Thanksgiving and the Winter break, we must stay focused and finish the semester strong. Attached to this newsletter is an outline of important dates and times relative to school closure for the upcoming Holiday Season. Click the link to see more information for November and December.

Hello,

I trust this message finds you well. I am thrilled to share with you the latest news from Southern University Laboratory School following the release of the official 2022-2023 school and district performance scores by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE). Our school has demonstrated significant progress, achieving a growth of  6.3 points and maintaining our “B” rating.

Southern University Laboratory School’s performance score is derived from the assessment index (LEAP 2025), Growth Index, Interests and Opportunities, ACT Index, Strength of Diploma, and Cohort Graduation Rate.

I extend my sincere appreciation and congratulations to our dedicated faculty and staff for their unwavering commitment to the Laboratory School. This accomplishment is a testament to their hard work and dedication. While we celebrate this growth, we acknowledge that there is more work to be done.

Next, to further enhance our educational approach, we are actively seeking to fill the position of a middle school Math and English teacher. This strategic move will allow us to implement an A/B block schedule for our middle school students, providing them with daily exposure to both math and English. This will also minimize the number of transitions during the day as well is provide more time to establish interventions and accelerate students when possible. We aim to implement this change in January, reinforcing our commitment to make adjustments for the academic benefit of our students.

In addition, for grades K-8, we are focusing on leveraging the Zearn math program to address the achievement gap and accelerate students in their respective math courses. Parents will soon receive information about Accelerated Reader, emphasizing the importance of daily reading for students. During afternoon carpool assistance, you may hear me encouraging students with a simple reminder: "Read tonight and be safe."

Recognizing that the ACT exam comprises 25% of our School Performance Score (SPS), we emphasize the significance of students participating in the national test days and continuously honing their skills in the key ACT areas.

Finally, I extend heartfelt congratulations to each one of you. Your tireless efforts and contributions have played a crucial role in making our district a model of educational excellence. As we celebrate this achievement, let us remain focused on our theme of "Under Construction," reinforcing our dedication to continuous improvement.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to Southern University Laboratory School. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students.

Together in Education,

Herman R. Brister

SULS Attendance Policy

I want to remind you that the bell to go to class will ring at 7:50 am. Students are tardy at 7:55 am.  The breakfast line will close at 7:50 am.

Attendance Guidelines (State Law) In order to be successful academically, students must attend school regularly, be on time for classes, and be present for a full instructional day. There is a direct correlation between student achievement and consistent attendance at school. According to the Compulsory Attendance Law: “In accordance with state policy, elementary students shall be in attendance a minimum of 167 days a school year. Middle and high school students shall be in attendance a minimum of 81 days per semester or 162 days a school year, or the equivalent, for schools not operating on a semester basis.”

Note: The first-hour bell rings at 7:45 AM and the tardy bell at 7:50 AM. If a middle or high school student is more than 10 minutes late for a class, that student will be marked “absent” for that period and it could be marked as skipping/cutting class.

Tuition Information

Listed below are details regarding the seat deposits for the 2024-2025 school year. As a result of the positive experiences our children have been afforded, the demand for seats at Southern University Laboratory School has intensified; therefore, in order to continue to grow and plan for the future we must start the process of locking in our returning students for the next school year. We understand that parents have school choice whether it's local public schools, magnet programs, gifted & talented programs, private schools, parochial schools, charter schools, or homeschooling, parents have choices as it relates to how their child can be educated. It is not fiscally responsible to wait until July or August to start planning for the upcoming school year. This also includes accepting applications to ensure that our numbers are optimal (large enough to operate efficiently and small enough to meet the academic needs of our students).

As we progress throughout this school year, we start the process of planning for the next. This increases our ability to recruit and retain quality staff members, leverage additional resources, and maximize facility planning.  Listed below is information relative to tuition payments for the second semester (Spring 24) as well as seat deposits for the 2024-2025 school year.

It is imperative that our current parents, and employees (SULS & SUBR) adhere to the admission guidelines set forth by the school. SULS and SUBR employees will have the initial opportunity to apply for student seats as they become available.

Application Questions: Contact Mrs. Square at Ashley_Square@sulabschool.com

Registration (Tuition/Seat Deposit) Questions: Contact Mrs. Allen at Ebony_Allen@sulabschool.com

I want to extend thanks to all the parents who diligently adhere to our tuition guidelines. Your cooperation has significantly improved the efficiency of our school's operations, allowing us to collect tuition on time more consistently than ever before. With that being said, billing statements for Spring 2024 have been sent out via QuickBooks as of Monday, October 16, 2023.

If your student has any outstanding balances or defaulted deferments, they won't receive their billing statements until those are settled.

Students with Fall 2023 deferments in good standing have received their Spring 2024 billing statements as of 10/16/24.

The deadline to pay Spring 2024 tuition in full or complete a deferment application is 12/14/23.

If you need to apply for the Spring 2024 Deferment, please complete the Inquiry form HERE. Deferment applications will be sent to inquiries via email. FYI: The Deferment Inquiry will close on 12/14/23 and deferments will not be accepted after that date.

The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!  We sold $6448.00 in books and other merchandise and based on that amount, the school earned $2958.00 Scholastic Dollars.  We will be able to buy more books, educational resources, furniture, and other items for our classrooms from Scholastic.  Thank you for supporting our annual Scholastic Book Fair.

Reading

Space, unique creature features, the wilderness, and farm animals are what our elementary students are reading and writing about.  Keep reading to find out what individual grade levels are exploring.

Kindergarten - Students are learning about what makes a good story.  They read a variety of fictional and informational texts as they travel to the farm.  Some of the texts they are reading include Three Little Pigs, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, and The Little Red Hen.

First Grade - What can we discover about animals’ unique features?  Students will learn the answer to these questions as they read Seven Blind Mice, Me…Jane, Sea Horse:  The Shyest Fish in the Sea and What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?

Second Grade - Have you ever wondered what life was like in the West for early Americans? Students will discover how buffalo roamed the American West and explore the environmental and social changes during this period in history.  Some of the texts they will be reading and writing about include The Buffalo are Back, Plains Indians and Johnny Appleseed.  Students will also analyze the painting Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California.

Third Grade - Space! People have long been fascinated by space travel.  Our young astronomers are exploring how people learn about space by reading Moonshot, One Giant Leap, and Zathura.

Fourth Grade - Sometimes the relationship between nature and humans can be challenging.  How does a challenging setting or physical environment change a person? Students explore the texts Hatchet, All Summer in a Day, and SAS Survival Handbook:  The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Anywhere to answer the question.

Fifth Grade - Students are preparing to discover their sense of humor and how authors play with words to grab readers’ attention.  Students will go on adventures with a boy named Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth and analyze the paintings The Persistence of Memory and Time Transfixed.

Boys State

Louisiana Boys State (LABS) is the premier leadership development program for young men in the state of Louisiana. Sponsored by the Louisiana Department of the American Legion, LABS is dedicated to providing a hands-on learning environment in which participants (termed “Citizens”) not only learn the ins and outs of the Louisiana political system but also learn how to transform themselves into effective leaders in their school, community, state, and country.

During the program Citizens are surrounded by similar young men, those who – like them – have distinguished themselves as leaders. They join an organization that has existed in Louisiana for more than 80 years and are among an elite group of men who have gone on to become business leaders, doctors, legislators, governors, and presidents.

ALA Louisiana Girls State is a unique and exciting government-in-action learning program in which the American Legion Auxiliary guides young women to become knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy, and patriotism. At Girls State, participants are called “citizens" who establish their own city, parish, and state government.  They are assigned to a political party – “Nationalists” or “Federalists” – these parties are nonpartisan with the goal of educating through experience.

Also known as LAGS, it's a one-week leadership and citizenship training program created to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government. Delegates attending Louisiana Girls State experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process. They also learn about the principles of citizenship and public service from guest speakers, elected officials, expert panels, and experienced counselors

ACT 8/9

Southern University Laboratory School will offer the Pre-ACT 8/9 on March 13, 2024. The Pre ACT 8/9 is a multiple-choice assessment that provides 8th and 9th-grade students an early measure of College and Career Readiness while serving as a practice opportunity for the ACT test.  The Pre ACT 8/9 covers English, math reading, and science - just as the ACT does although the rigor is more aligned with what students should know in 8th and 9th grade. The Pre-ACT 8/9 is approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Following the test, students, parents, and teachers will receive a detailed report that will help everyone get a better sense of the skills, interests, plans, and goals of students. The score report along with the retained test booklet will help students and parents understand how they are doing in terms of progress toward work readiness and preparation and identify areas of strength and weakness. Students will also receive a projected ACT score.

The cost of the Pre ACT 8/9 is $16.  Although the test is designed for 8th and 9th grade students, 6th and 7th-grade students are welcome. The deadline to register for the exam is January 31, 2024.

LDOE Releases SULS School Performance Score

We are thrilled to share with you the latest news from Southern University Laboratory School following the release of the official 2022-2023 school and district performance scores by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE). Our school has demonstrated significant progress, achieving a growth of  6.3 points and maintaining our “B” rating. (Click Here For The Full Letter).

Celebrating Growth and Looking Ahead: Latest Achievements and Future Plans at Southern University Laboratory School

This will also minimize the number of transitions during the day as well as provide more time to establish interventions and accelerate students when possible.

Herman R. Brister, Director

It is important to us that you receive pertinent information as quickly as possible; thus, allowing you to make informed decisions as it relates to your child. Message from the Director

Hello,

We are approaching the second nine weeks of school. Students should be well adjusted to their teachers and classes. It is important that students have a clear routine for completing homework assignments and projects after school.

If your child does not have any homework then they can complete and or work on their Zearn Accounts and/or IXL. Students should also be reading daily. Students who are comprehending and reading the exams stand a better chance of passing the exams.

The SULS family is excited to welcome the following individuals to our school

  1. Stampley, Jason (Journey to Careers). Mr. Stampley is a former graduate of Southern University Laboratory School. He has experience coming from East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and Capitol High School. His email address is Jason_Stampley@sulabschool.com

  2. Parks, Camrin (Middle School Math) Ms. Parks is an honor graduate from Southern University Baton Rouge and has worked at Thrive Academy. Her email address is Camrin_Parks@sulabschool.com

  3. Raoof, Safiyy (Director of Bands). Mr. Raoof is familiar with the Kitten family, he is returning back to SULS after serving as our Band Director in the past. He has worked in various roles at other high schools. He also works with the “Human JukeBox" at Southern University. His email address is Safiyy_Raoof@sulabschool.com

Next, we are in the process of finalizing the recruitment and hiring process of two counselors for our students.  This will provide us with the opportunity to provide robust academic and behavioral services to our students.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to renovate and provide upgrades to our school. Currently, the SULS parking lot is being upgraded. We are looking at potentially a two-week time period to repair. Our families have made the adjustment well during morning and afternoon carpool. Please continue to be patient as well as have your child ready to exit the vehicle as they prepare to get out of the car. I know they want to take one more bite of that biscuit before getting out (lol), but it slows the line down when they are not ready to exit with their belongings.

Finally, listed below are details regarding the seat deposits for the 2023-2024 school year. As a result of the positive experiences our children have been afforded, the demand for seats at Southern University Laboratory School has intensified; therefore, in order to continue to grow and plan for the future we must start the process of locking in our returning students for the next school year. PSAT

Southern University Laboratory School will be administering the PSAT on October 17, 2023.  The PSAT test is a preliminary test for the SAT also used to award National Merit Scholarships.  The test is typically offered to 9th and 10th graders.  The test usually takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete and has a total of 139 questions.  The PSAT has four sections covering reading, writing, and math. The first two sections (Reading and Writing and Language) test reading comprehension and writing, language, and grammar. The second two sections (Math — No Calculator and Math — Calculator) cover math. Only those students who signed up and paid for the test online will be allowed to take the test. The deadline is October 11, 2023.

The PSAT is scored on a scale of 320-1520. Students start with a raw score for each section (Math, Reading, Writing, and Language). Your raw score is simply the number of questions you get right, with no penalty for incorrect answers.

Students wanting a high score should begin preparing for the PSAT well in advance. The best tools for preparing for the PSAT are official PSAT practice tests. These PSAT practice tests are written by the same team that writes the actual PSAT.  You can also prepare using SAT prep books. Because the SAT has similar content and structure to the PSAT, SAT prep books will be useful in helping you get ready for the PSAT.

If you would like more information about the PSAT and the benefits of taking it, please visit https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt.

This year is the four-year anniversary of Traeh’s death. On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the foundation had its Third Annual Bullying and Suicide Awareness Runway Show at Enchanted Gardens located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This show brought awareness to bullying and youth suicide while showcasing local designers and community youth, providing resources and tips to stop/prevent bullying and suicide, providing resources to support mental health and crisis prevention, and paying tribute to Traeh Thyssen.

The Traeh Thyssen Have a hearT Foundation was founded in 2019 by Rosalynn Thyssen after the death of her son, Traeh. Traeh was a 13-year-old middle school student in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His name is ‘heart’ spelled backwards. He was caring, compassionate, loving, forgiving, kind, and considerate. Traeh died by suicide on October 3, 2019, because of unresolved bullying by his peers. The foundation strives to take a stand to stop bullying and prevent youth suicide by bringing awareness and providing education, training, resources, and support to families and communities.

These exceptional students had the rare opportunity to gain real-world experience in one of the most renowned sports networks in the world. From the moment they set foot in the ESPN studios, they were immersed in a whirlwind of excitement and learning.

One of the highlights of this internship was the chance to be part of the production team for Black College Live. This groundbreaking show celebrates the rich traditions, history, and athleticism of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Their roles extended beyond the technical aspects as they contributed ideas for on-air segments and helped with guest coordination. This hands-on experience allowed them to witness firsthand how a nationally televised sports program is created from the ground up.

The ESPN internship was more than just a remarkable experience for these students; it was a stepping stone toward their future careers in sports broadcasting. Mariah, Dashayla, Khaleb, Ethan, Faith, Dalton, and Keyana gained invaluable knowledge, forged invaluable connections, and honed their skills to perfection during their time with ESPN.

Southern University Laboratory School can certainly take pride in nurturing such extraordinary talent.

The Kitten Family would like to thank Mr. Willie Scott for ushering this awesome opportunity for our students.

Parking Lot Construction/Carpool Adjustment

We proudly announce that the work to begin the renovations to the Faculty/High School (gravel) parking lot will begin on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.  The process may take up to approximately three weeks to complete.  As a result, we will have to move the Middle and High school carpool to another location.

October 3, 2023

Dear Kitten Family,

We proudly announce that the work to begin the renovations to the Faculty/High School parking lot will begin on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.  The process may take up to approximately three weeks to complete.  As a result, we will have to adjust our carpool procedures.

Morning Carpool

Elementary parents will utilize gate 2 (Closest to gym) on Isabel Herson St. Middle and high school parents will now utilize gate 3 (closest to football field). All lanes will merge into the elementary carpool drop off behind the gymnasium. Once students have been dropped off parents will continue to the road next to the football field to exit at Isabella Herson Street. Please have students prepared to exit the car prior to pulling up.

Afternoon Carpool

Elementary parents will utilize gate 2 (Closest to gym) on Isabel Herson St. and will proceed forward behind the gymnasium to carpool. Middle and high school parents will now utilize gate 3 (closest to football field) and will continue straight to pick students up from the basketball court near the band trailer. All lanes will exit near the dumpsters and will proceed to Isabella Herson Street. It is imperative that parents are on time for dismissal. Please be patient with us as we embark upon this new process.  Do not try passing cars up along the route or in the driveway for the safety of our students.  SULS faculty will be on site to direct you accordingly.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we excitedly prepare for the new parking lot.

Respectfully,

Herman Brister
