I am thrilled to share with you the latest news from Southern University Laboratory School following the release of the official 2022-2023 school and district performance scores by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE). Our school has demonstrated significant progress, achieving a growth of 6.3 points and maintaining our “B” rating.
Southern University Laboratory School’s performance score is derived from the assessment index (LEAP 2025), Growth Index, Interests and Opportunities, ACT Index, Strength of Diploma, and Cohort Graduation Rate.
I extend my sincere appreciation and congratulations to our dedicated faculty and staff for their unwavering commitment to the Laboratory School. This accomplishment is a testament to their hard work and dedication. While we celebrate this growth, we acknowledge that there is more work to be done.
Next, to further enhance our educational approach, we are actively seeking to fill the position of a middle school Math and English teacher. This strategic move will allow us to implement an A/B block schedule for our middle school students, providing them with daily exposure to both math and English. This will also minimize the number of transitions during the day as well is provide more time to establish interventions and accelerate students when possible. We aim to implement this change in January, reinforcing our commitment to make adjustments for the academic benefit of our students.
In addition, for grades K-8, we are focusing on leveraging the Zearn math program to address the achievement gap and accelerate students in their respective math courses. Parents will soon receive information about Accelerated Reader, emphasizing the importance of daily reading for students. During afternoon carpool assistance, you may hear me encouraging students with a simple reminder: "Read tonight and be safe."
Recognizing that the ACT exam comprises 25% of our School Performance Score (SPS), we emphasize the significance of students participating in the national test days and continuously honing their skills in the key ACT areas.
Finally, I extend heartfelt congratulations to each one of you. Your tireless efforts and contributions have played a crucial role in making our district a model of educational excellence. SULS Attendance Policy
I want to remind you that the bell to go to class will ring at 7:50 am. Students are tardy at 7:55 am. The breakfast line will close at 7:50 am.
Attendance Guidelines (State Law) In order to be successful academically, students must attend school regularly, be on time for classes, and be present for a full instructional day. There is a direct correlation between student achievement and consistent attendance at school. According to the Compulsory Attendance Law: “In accordance with state policy, elementary students shall be in attendance a minimum of 167 days a school year. Middle and high school students shall be in attendance a minimum of 81 days per semester or 162 days a school year, or the equivalent, for schools not operating on a semester basis.”
Note: The first-hour bell rings at 7:45 AM and the tardy bell at 7:50 AM. If a middle or high school student is more than 10 minutes late for a class, that student will be marked “absent” for that period and it could be marked as skipping/cutting class.
Tuition Information
Listed below are details regarding the seat deposits for the 2024-2025 school year. As a result of the positive experiences our children have been afforded, the demand for seats at Southern University Laboratory School has intensified; therefore, in order to continue to grow and plan for the future we must start the process of locking in our returning students for the next school year. We understand that parents have school choice whether it's local public schools, magnet programs, gifted & talented programs, private schools, parochial schools, charter schools, or homeschooling, parents have choices as it relates to how their child can be educated. It is not fiscally responsible to wait until July or August to start planning for the upcoming school year. This also includes accepting applications to ensure that our numbers are optimal (large enough to operate efficiently and small enough to meet the academic needs of our students).
As we progress throughout this school year, we start the process of planning for the next. This increases our ability to recruit and retain quality staff members, leverage additional resources, and maximize facility planning. Listed below is information relative to tuition payments for the second semester (Spring 24) as well as seat deposits for the 2024-2025 school year.
It is imperative that our current parents, and employees (SULS & SUBR) adhere to the admission guidelines set forth by the school. SULS and SUBR employees will have the initial opportunity to apply for student seats as they become available.

I want to extend thanks to all the parents who diligently adhere to our tuition guidelines. Your cooperation has significantly improved the efficiency of our school's operations, allowing us to collect tuition on time more consistently than ever before. Your trust in and support of our revamped tuition collection process is greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for your unwavering commitment to the Lab School’s success! With that being said, billing statements for Spring 2024 have been sent out via QuickBooks as of Monday, October 16, 2023.
If your student has any outstanding balances or defaulted deferments, they won't receive their billing statements until those are settled.
Students with Fall 2023 deferments in good standing have received their Spring 2024 billing statements as of 10/16/24.
The deadline to pay Spring 2024 tuition in full or complete a deferment application is 12/14/23.
If you need to apply for the Spring 2024 Deferment, please complete the Inquiry form HERE. Deferment applications will be sent to inquiries via email. FYI: The Deferment Inquiry will close on 12/14/23 and deferments will not be accepted after that date.
Please note that if your FALL 2023 deferment is defaulted, your deferment inquiry will not be processed until the balance is paid in total.
Tuition Exemption for SUS/SULab Employees
Starting in Spring 2024, the Tuition Exemption process for SUS employees and SULab employees will be electronic and will align with the SUS board policy, requiring proof of dependent status through IRS Section 152 Proof of Qualified Dependent documentation for approval of the tuition waiver.

Seat Deposits
We are excited to announce some important changes to our seat deposit process for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year due to the continuous growth of our student body.
As you may be aware, the increase in our student population has made securing seats a more valuable resource than ever before. To address this, we are committed to ensuring that each returning student has a seat accounted for well in advance of the new academic year.
To achieve this goal, we are pleased to inform you that the $100 seat deposits for PreK-12th grade for the 2024-2025 school year will open via EazyTicks on November 1st and will close on January 31st for returning students.

Elementary Information
The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success! We sold $6448.00 in books and other merchandise and based on that amount, the school earned $2958.00 Scholastic Dollars. We will be able to buy more books, educational resources, furniture, and other items for our classrooms from Scholastic. Thank you for supporting our annual Scholastic Book Fair.
Reading
Space, unique creature features, the wilderness, and farm animals are what our elementary students are reading and writing about. Keep reading to find out what individual grade levels are exploring.
Kindergarten - Students are learning about what makes a good story. They read a variety of fictional and informational texts as they travel to the farm. Some of the texts they are reading include Three Little Pigs, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, and The Little Red Hen.
First Grade - What can we discover about animals’ unique features? Students will learn the answer to these questions as they read Seven Blind Mice, Me…Jane, Sea Horse: The Shyest Fish in the Sea and What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?
Second Grade - Have you ever wondered what life was like in the West for early Americans? Students will discover how buffalo roamed the American West and explore the environmental and social changes during this period in history. Some of the texts they will be reading and writing about include The Buffalo are Back, Plains Indians and Johnny Appleseed. Students will also analyze the painting Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California.
Third Grade - Space! People have long been fascinated by space travel. Our young astronomers are exploring how people learn about space by reading Moonshot, One Giant Leap, and Zathura.
Fourth Grade - Sometimes the relationship between nature and humans can be challenging. How does a challenging setting or physical environment change a person? Students explore the texts Hatchet, All Summer in a Day, and SAS Survival Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Anywhere to answer the question.
Fifth Grade - Students are preparing to discover their sense of humor and how authors play with words to grab readers’ attention. Students will go on adventures with a boy named Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth and analyze the paintings The Persistence of Memory and Time Transfixed.

Boys State
Louisiana Boys State (LABS) is the premier leadership development program for young men in the state of Louisiana. Sponsored by the Louisiana Department of the American Legion, LABS is dedicated to providing a hands-on learning environment in which participants (termed “Citizens”) not only learn the ins and outs of the Louisiana political system but also learn how to transform themselves into effective leaders in their school, community, state, and country.
During the program Citizens are surrounded by similar young men, those who – like them – have distinguished themselves as leaders. They join an organization that has existed in Louisiana for more than 80 years and are among an elite group of men who have gone on to become business leaders, doctors, legislators, governors, and presidents.
Girls State
ALA Louisiana Girls State is a unique and exciting government-in-action learning program in which the American Legion Auxiliary guides young women to become knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy, and patriotism. At Girls State, participants are called “citizens" who establish their own city, parish, and state government. They are assigned to a political party – “Nationalists” or “Federalists” – these parties are nonpartisan with the goal of educating through experience.
Also known as LAGS, it's a one-week leadership and citizenship training program created to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government. Delegates attending Louisiana Girls State experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process. They also learn about the principles of citizenship and public service from guest speakers, elected officials, expert panels, and experienced counselors

ACT 8/9
Southern University Laboratory School will offer the Pre-ACT 8/9 on March 13, 2024. The Pre ACT 8/9 is a multiple-choice assessment that provides 8th and 9th-grade students an early measure of College and Career Readiness while serving as a practice opportunity for the ACT test. The Pre ACT 8/9 covers English, math reading, and science - just as the ACT does although the rigor is more aligned with what students should know in 8th and 9th grade. The Pre-ACT 8/9 is approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Following the test, students, parents, and teachers will receive a detailed report that will help everyone get a better sense of the skills, interests, plans, and goals of students. The score report along with the retained test booklet will help students and parents understand how they are doing in terms of progress toward work readiness and preparation and identify areas of strength and weakness. Students will also receive a projected ACT score.
The cost of the Pre ACT 8/9 is $16. Although the test is designed for 8th and 9th grade students, 6th and 7th-grade students are welcome. The deadline to register for the exam is January 31, 2024.

Dolores Spikes Honors College Information Session
The Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College at Southern University (the "Honors College") will host some of the "best and brightest" at a free informative session. This event should be of interest to high school seniors who meet the requirements for admission to the Honors College, which generally include a 3.3 GPA and a composite ACT score of 23 or higher or an equivalent SAT score (without writing).
The Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College at Southern University (the "Honors College") will host some of the "best and brightest" at a free informative session. This event should be of interest to high school seniors who meet the requirements for admission to the Honors College, which generally include a 3.3 GPA and a composite ACT score of 23 or higher or an equivalent SAT score (without writing). Students who graduate first or second in their high school class can potentially be admitted with a composite ACT score of 20 or an equivalent SAT score (without writing). Senior parents are encouraged to attend by Interim Dean Deadra James Mackie. Speakers will discuss the benefits and requirements of the Honors College, as well as scholarships and more!

The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It is currently administered by ACT, a nonprofit organization of the same name. The ACT test covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning.
ACT Waivers
ACT waivers are in. All juniors and seniors are allotted one waiver per semester. Sophomores and freshmen are allotted one waiver for the year. Those can be picked up in Mrs. Sherrard’s office.

ACT Test Information Release (TIR)
What is Test Information Release?
By purchasing Test Information Release (TIR), you will receive a digital copy of the multiple-choice test questions, your answers, a copy of your answer document, the answer key, and the conversion table used in determining your ACT scores. If you take the optional writing test, you will receive a copy of the writing prompt, the writing test scoring rubric, and your essay scores. You can expect digital TIR materials to be provided within MyACT a few weeks after your score release. If you requested and were approved for alternate formats (April testing only), these materials will be prepared once your TIR report is available in MyACT and may take up to eight weeks for processing and shipping.

Hello,
We are approaching the second nine weeks of school. Students should be well adjusted to their teachers and classes. It is important that students have a clear routine for completing homework assignments and projects after school.
If your child does not have any homework then they can complete and or work on their Zearn Accounts and/or IXL. Students should also be reading daily. Students who are comprehending and reading the exams stand a better chance of passing the exams.

Next, we are in the process of finalizing the recruitment and hiring process of two counselors for our students. This will provide us with the opportunity to provide robust academic and behavioral services to our students.
Thank you for your patience as we continue to renovate and provide upgrades to our school. Currently, the SULS parking lot is being upgraded. We are looking at potentially a two-week time period to repair. Our families have made the adjustment well during morning and afternoon carpool. Please continue to be patient as well as have your child ready to exit the vehicle as they prepare to get out of the car. I know they want to take one more bite of that biscuit before getting out (lol), but it slows the line down when they are not ready to exit with their belongings.
Finally, listed below are details regarding the seat deposits for the 2023-2024 school year. As a result of the positive experiences our children have been afforded, the demand for seats at Southern University Laboratory School has intensified; therefore, in order to continue to grow and plan for the future we must start the process of locking in our returning students for the next school year. We understand that parents have school choice whether its, 's local public schools, magnet programs, gifted & talented programs, private schools, parochial schools, charter schools, or homeschooling, parents have choice as it relates to how their child can be educated. It is not fiscally responsible to wait until July or August to start planning for the upcoming school year. This also includes accepting applications to ensure that our numbers are optimal (large enough to operate efficiently and small enough to meet the academic needs of our students).
As we progress throughout this school year, we start the process of planning for the next. This increases our ability to recruit and retain quality staff members, leverage additional resources, and maximize facility planning. Listed below is information relative to tuition payments for the second semester (Spring 24) as well as seat deposits for the 2024-2025 school year.
It is imperative that our current parents, and employees (SULS & SUBR) adhere to the admission guidelines set forth by the school. SULS and SUBR employees will have the initial opportunity to apply for student seats as they become available.

I want to extend thanks to all the parents who diligently adhere to our tuition guidelines. Your cooperation has significantly improved the efficiency of our school's operations, allowing us to collect tuition on time more consistently than ever before. Your trust in and support of our revamped tuition collection process is greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for your unwavering commitment to the Lab School’s success! With that being said, billing statements for Spring 2024 will be sent out via QuickBooks on Monday, October 16, 2023.
If your student has any outstanding balances or defaulted deferments, they won't receive their billing statements until those are settled.
Students with Fall 2023 deferments in good standing will receive their Spring 2024 billing statements on 10/16/24.
The deadline to pay Spring 2024 tuition in full or complete a deferment application is 12/14/23.
If you need to apply for the Spring 2024 Deferment, please complete the Inquiry form HERE. Deferment applications will be sent to inquiries via email to be completed on 10/16/23. FYI: The Deferment Inquiry will close on 12/14/23 and deferments will not be accepted after that date.

Seat Deposits
We are excited to announce some important changes to our seat deposit process for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year due to the continuous growth of our student body.
As you may be aware, the increase in our student population has made securing seats a more valuable resource than ever before. To address this, we are committed to ensuring that each returning student has a seat accounted for well in advance of the new academic year.
To achieve this goal, we are pleased to inform you that the $100 seat deposits for PreK-12th grade for the 2024-2025 school year will open via EazyTicks on November 1st and will close on January 31st for returning students.
Tuition Exemption for SUS/SULab Employees
Starting in Spring 2024, the Tuition Exemption process for SUS employees and SULab employees will be electronic and will align with the SUS board policy, requiring proof of dependent status through IRS Section 152 Proof of Qualified Dependent documentation for approval of the tuition waiver.

SULS Kittens Engage in EBRP Library Book Mobile
On Friday, October 6, 2023, the Elementary Kittens welcomed the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. This month’s visit started with story time for the Prekindergarten students and afterward, the other grade levels were able to return books previously checked out and check out a new book. SULS has partnered with East Baton Rouge Parish Library to bring the Bookmobile to the campus each month and elementary students can check out books, participate in story time, and learn what other offerings are available at local libraries.
Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treat will be held Friday, October 27, 2023, from 1:30 to 3:00. Elementary Kittens look forward to dressing up in costume, playing games, and collecting treats.

There’s no book fair like a Scholastic Book Fair!
We are excited that the Scholastic Book Fair will be returning this year. This year’s fair will be larger than last year’s with more books and school supplies thus providing SULS the opportunity to earn a larger profit. Parents will also have the opportunity to set up eWallet for students. eWallet is a digital payment account that allows funding of a child’s purchase in advance. In addition to eWallet for students, teachers will have an eWallet so families can contribute to help build classroom libraries. eWallet links will be shared via Classroom Dojo prior to the start of the book fair.

First Circuit Court of Appeal
The Kitten Advocate Club along with the Law Studies students will be visiting the First Circuit Court of Appeal. Members of the Club will meet with Chief Judge John Guidry in his chambers and view an actual oral argument before the Court. This is a great educational experience for the students. They will learn how the Court system works, and those who are participating in the Marshall Moot Court Competition will see how an oral argument is done.

Students in the Dual Enrollment Process Technology class will visit the refinery on October 27, 2023. Students will get a first-hand look at what goes on in the plant along with procedures, policies, and protocols for process technicians in the field. There will be a question and answer session to follow.
LSU Museum of Art Shaw Center for the Arts
The art department will be traveling to LSU’s Museum of Arts. There they will have the opportunity to view different art under different genres in addition to critiquing the styles and finished products of renowned and local artists. The museum presents touring exhibitions of regional, American, and European painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photography.

Middle/High School Information
PSAT
Southern University Laboratory School will be administering the PSAT on October 17, 2023. The PSAT test is a preliminary test for the SAT also used to award National Merit Scholarships. The test is typically offered to 9th and 10th graders. The test usually takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete and has a total of 139 questions. The PSAT has four sections covering reading, writing, and math. The first two sections (Reading and Writing and Language) test reading comprehension and writing, language, and grammar. The second two sections (Math — No Calculator and Math — Calculator) cover math. Only those students who signed up and paid for the test online will be allowed to take the test. The deadline is October 11, 2023.
The PSAT is scored on a scale of 320-1520. Students start with a raw score for each section (Math, Reading, Writing, and Language). Your raw score is simply the number of questions you get right, with no penalty for incorrect answers.
Students wanting a high score should begin preparing for the PSAT well in advance. The best tools for preparing for the PSAT are official PSAT practice tests. These PSAT practice tests are written by the same team that writes the actual PSAT. You can also prepare using SAT prep books. Because the SAT has similar content and structure to the PSAT, SAT prep books will be useful in helping you get ready for the PSAT.

We are inviting all students at SULS to enter their original artwork into our Yearbook Cover Design Contest. Design a cover that shows "Family Over Everything". First place will have their artwork showcased on the front cover of the yearbook. Second place will have their artwork showcased on the back cover of the yearbook.
Rules for Submission:

Drug Awareness Month
October is National Substance Use Prevention Month. This is a time for communities to come together as partners in prevention. This month is also a time to acknowledge those in recovery, as well as children, parents, family, and friends supporting them. What is Test Information Release?
By purchasing Test Information Release (TIR), you will receive a digital copy of the multiple-choice test questions, your answers, a copy of your answer document, the answer key, and the conversion table used in determining your ACT scores. If you take the optional writing test, you will receive a copy of the writing prompt, the writing test scoring rubric, and your essay scores. You can expect digital TIR materials to be provided within MyACT a few weeks after your score release. SULS Students participates in 3rd Annual Third Annual Bullying and Suicide Awareness Runway Show
This year is the four-year anniversary of Traeh’s death. On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the foundation had its Third Annual Bullying and Suicide Awareness Runway Show at Enchanted Gardens located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This show brought awareness to bullying and youth suicide while showcasing local designers and community youth, providing resources and tips to stop/prevent bullying and suicide, providing resources to support mental health and crisis prevention, and paying tribute to Traeh Thyssen.
The Traeh Thyssen Have a hearT Foundation was founded in 2019 by Rosalynn Thyssen after the death of her son, Traeh. Traeh was a 13-year-old middle school student in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His name is ‘heart’ spelled backwards. He was caring, compassionate, loving, forgiving, kind, and considerate. Traeh died by suicide on October 3, 2019, because of unresolved bullying by his peers. The foundation strives to take a stand to stop bullying and prevent youth suicide by bringing awareness and providing education, training, resources, and support to families and communities.

This groundbreaking show celebrates the rich traditions, history, and athleticism of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Their roles extended beyond the technical aspects as they contributed ideas for on-air segments and helped with guest coordination. This hands-on experience allowed them to witness firsthand how a nationally televised sports program is created from the ground up.
The ESPN internship was more than just a remarkable experience for these students; it was a stepping stone toward their future careers in sports broadcasting. Mariah, Dashayla, Khaleb, Ethan, Faith, Dalton, and Keyana gained invaluable knowledge, forged invaluable connections, and honed their skills to perfection during their time with ESPN.
These Kittens, have demonstrated that with passion, dedication, and perseverance, dreams can become reality. Their internship with ESPN during the Southern University vs. Florida A&M football game was a remarkable chapter in their academic journey. It showcased not only their talent but also the limitless potential that lies within each of them. As they continue to pursue their passion for sports broadcasting, their story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring young professionals. Southern University Laboratory School can certainly take pride in nurturing such extraordinary talent.

Elementary parents will utilize gate 2 (Closest to gym) on Isabel Herson St. Middle and high school parents will now utilize gate 3 (closest to football field). All lanes will merge into the elementary carpool drop off behind the gymnasium. Once students have been dropped off parents will continue to the road next to the football field to exit at Isabella Herson Street. Please have students prepared to exit the car prior to pulling up.
Afternoon Carpool
Elementary parents will utilize gate 2 (Closest to gym) on Isabel Herson St. and will proceed forward behind the gymnasium to carpool. Middle and high school parents will now utilize gate 3 (closest to football field) and will continue straight to pick students up from the basketball court near the band trailer. All lanes will exit near the dumpsters and will proceed to Isabella Herson Street. It is imperative that parents are on time for dismissal. Please be patient with us as we embark upon this new process. Do not try passing cars up along the route or in the driveway for the safety of our students. SULS faculty will be on site to direct you accordingly.

AS we start the 2023 schooly year, we wanted to provide you with some pertinent information relative to whats going on at Southern University Laboratory School. We are excited about the start of the 2023 school year as we are approaching 500 students at the Laboratory school. As a result of our growth, we are in the process of expanding staff as well as offerings and opportunities.
Message from the Director
We are excited about the start of the 2023 school year. We are approaching 500 students at the Laboratory school. As a result of our growth, we are in the process of expanding staff as well as offerings and opportunities. I am looking to make a major schedule change in the middle school area in an effort to increase math and ELA time for students.
Students should be in their routines at home. Parents should be asking these two questions daily: 1. How was your day? 2. What is for homework? Students should have clear routines for completing homework, eating supper, as well as bedtime. Many of our students have cell phones. Please monitor not only what sites they visit as well as the amount of time they spend on cell phones. You may have to take the cell phones from the students at night. If you have not signed up for class dojo (elementary school only) please do so. Middle and High School parents should have access to their students' Google Classroom.
For the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, all visitors are expected to check into the front office. Parents, guardians, and/or family members are not permitted to walk to a teacher’s classroom. SULS have protocols and procedures outlined relative to classroom and campus visits. Parents who violate this protocol will be subject to disciplinary action outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook (page 9).
Next, I would like to thank you for your patience during carpool. I know some days are longer than others. We are committed to being as efficient as possible; with that said, some days will be different than others. As after school activities increase (football, band, cheer, dance, clubs, etc.), afternoon carpool will change. Also, as Southern University students work out their schedules, afternoon carpool will thin out as well. Parents are not allowed to drop off their students across the street, mini dome, nursing building, Swan St. sidewalk etc. Also, once the gates close at 7:55 am, you must report to the front office to check in. Dropping your child off without someone being on duty jeopardizes the safety of students. Please understand that our teachers are expected to expose our students to the entire curriculum as we progress throughout the school year.
We are also finalizing the counseling position. 504 plans have been divided between Mrs. Square (Elementary), Mrs. Carter-Robinson (Middle School), & Mrs. Sherrard (High School). If you have any questions please contact them.
The 1st nine weeks will end October 11, 2023. Please check Parent Access for the latest information regarding your child's grades and attendance. Tardy and attendance reports will be run soon. Elementary Information
HC Parade participation:
Southern University Laboratory School Homecoming is coming around the corner. Many elementary grades (K-5) have a float and the floats typically consist of a trailer with a vehicle to pull it. Your teacher will send out a Class Dojo with more information and a sign up for volunteers. The float theme will be provided by the teacher and parents will need to coordinate any decorations. Candy (throws) must be wrapped in small snack and/or sandwich bags.

ASVAB: The Junior Class will take the ASVAB on September 7, 2023 at school. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.
An additional benefit to taking the ASVAB is that it allows the student access to the ASVAB Career Exploration Program, a career exploration guide that will help match you with a post-secondary plan suited just for you.
Scores are only good for a calendar year. Any seniors interested in re-taking the ASVAB can click the link to sign up or see Mrs. Carter-Robinson.

SULS Art Department Pay Tribute to Alma W. Thomas
“Alma Woodsey Thomas (September 22, 1891 – February 24, 1978) was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the "exuberant", colorful, abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career teaching art at Washington's Shaw Junior High School.
Under the direction of Ms. Deja June (@heyms.june), the Southern University Laboratory School Art Department paid tribute to the renowned artist Alma Woodsey Thomas.
“Alma Thomas (September 22, 1891 – February 24, 1978) was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the "exuberant", colorful, abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career teaching art at Washington's Shaw Junior High School.
Thomas, who is often considered a member of the Washington Color School art movement but alternatively classified by some as an Expressionist, earned her teaching degree from University of the District of Columbia (known as Miner Normal School at the time). Once the bell rings for class, students will be directed to report to designated areas to retrieve their schedules. Next, another bell will ring for the students to report to 1st period.

Uniform Update and Information
Dear Parents,
We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen supply chain issues and the availability of some items, the completion of some orders may be delayed. You will receive an email when your order is ready for pickup.
Therefore, for a limited time, the enforcement of the uniform policy will lenient until after labor day, as follows:
- Dress day will commence on Monday, September 14, 2023; and
- School logos will not be required on school-approved uniform items until Wednesday, September 6, 2023. (NOTE: Dri-Fit/Performance polo shirts are not allowed.)
Please know the PTO/Kitten Club corps of parent volunteers is working diligently to complete as many orders as possible.
