Congratulations to Southern University Laboratory School students Jeremiah Dunbar, Reginald Ellis II and Brandon Odom. They attended Kappa Kamp (Leadership camp) in Dallas, TX last week. Their team won 1st place in the Kappa Kamp Business Plan. They each won a monetary gift from Google.

Kappa Kamp is an enrichment camp that focuses on College Readiness, Business and Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy and Team Building. The young men who attend Kappa Kamp acquire life skills through intensive workshops and learning through structured play activities. Kampers are immersed in different backgrounds with a variety of cultural activities, field trips, and lectures.
Shout out to Reginald who received the Leadership award, for winning the STEM Egg Drop competition. His egg sustained the least amount of damage after being dropped from the highest height. He was awarded a gift from Google.

Welcome back to another exciting school year! We hope you had a wonderful summer filled with relaxation, adventure, and cherished memories. As we prepare to embark on this new academic journey, we wanted to extend our warmest greetings and share our anticipation for all the amazing experiences that lie ahead.
Throughout the past few months, our dedicated team has been working diligently to ensure that everything is ready for your return. Our classrooms have been meticulously organized, learning materials have been prepared, and innovative lesson plans have been designed to engage and inspire each and every one of our students.
At our school, we believe that education is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about fostering a love for learning. 5th Grade Student of the Year: Bryleigh Seals
Bryleigh Seals is a rising 6th grader at Southern University Laboratory School. She has been attending the Laboratory School since Pre-K. This future artist is a member of the Girl Scouts where they help her to extend her leadership skills. She is a 4.0 student who has out performed the state of Louisiana on her standardized test scores. She is a member of New Galilee Baptist Church where she sings in the choir.
This beautiful soul prides herself on being a friend to everyone and prides herself on leading by example. She was able to advance to the state regionals in the student of the year competition. Bryleigh looks forward to attending an HBCU when she attends college.

8th Grade Student of The year: Bryson Addison
Bryson Addison is entering the 9th grade at Southern University Laboratory School. He has been attending the Laboratory School since Pre-K. This honor student was the 8th grade representative, president of the Jr. Beta Club, and V.P. of Youth & Government. He also serves as student ambassador for the school while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Bryson enjoys volunteering at the hospital while being a member of the Knights of Pythagoras and Louisiana Leadership Institute. He loves music as he plays music in the school’s marching band. He is looking forward to attending a HBCU where he plans to major in Computer Science.

Welcome back and we look forward to an exciting school year. Last year we were able to launch a few new extra curricular activities for students such as Girl Scouts, Elementary Junior Beta and Youth Cheerleading Squad. This school year we look forward to launching 4-H, a STEM Club. Also, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Book Mobile will visit our elementary students the first Friday of each month. Students will have the opportunity to apply for a Library Card.
Student achievement is and always will be a priority and we need your assistance with ensuring students are completing their at home assignments, maintaining an open line of communication with your child’s teacher in regards to student progress and or behavior concerns and students attending school daily, arriving on time and avoiding early checkouts if possible. When students are not in their seats, valuable instructional time is lost.
The Louisiana Department of Education has a tool box of Literacy and Math resources available to support students at home. Be on the lookout for recommended resources going home in your child’s backpack and also posted in the grade level Google Classroom.

All high school students are required to complete a course request for their high school courses to ensure a well-rounded and comprehensive education. This process is important as it allows students to be a part of their educational journey based on requirements, interests, strengths and future aspirations. Being a part of this process affords students to actively take ownership of their education, fostering a sense of responsibility and self-determination. More importantly, it enables school administrators to plan to meet the needs and interests of all students. This ensures a dynamic and engaging learning environment that empowers students to reach their full potential.
If you have already submitted a course request, thank you. There is no need to complete a second request. For those of you who have not completed a course request, we urge you to do so promptly. Completing a request allows us to complete the scheduling process, and to ensure that all students have a full schedule by the start of school. Your active involvement in this process is instrumental in helping us plan for a successful academic school year.

Are you interested in earning a Process and/or Petroleum Technology Certificate or Associate's Degree? Process and Petroleum technology programs are offered by Southern University. These programs are established in partnership with the Shreveport campus, but are hosted on the Baton Rouge campus.
All classes and labs are in Baton Rouge.
Employment prospects in the process industry are diverse including oil and gas, power generation, food and beverage processing, waste and water treatment, pulp and paper manufacturing, pharmaceutical and many more.

Carpool
When can students be dropped off? Students can be dropped off at 7:35 am
What time do I need to check my student into the front office when I am late? Students are tardy at 7:55 am and will not be allowed to enter once the gate(s) are closed. Students must check into the front office and enter class with a check in slip.
How does morning carpool work?
Elementary carpool will start at 7:35 am. Parents will enter at gate 3 (Isabelle Herson St.) and move toward the gym area. Students will be dropped off at the back near the back of the cafeteria. After dropping off the students parents will exit gate #4 (near football practice field) turning right toward Isabelle Herson St. .
Middle/High School carpool will start at 7:35 am. Parents will enter at gate 2 (Isabelle Herson St.) making the first left in the gravel area. Students will exit the vehicle and parents will exit gate #1 turning right (Isabelle Herson St.)
How does afternoon carpool work?
Parents will start lining up for elementary carpool at 2:30 pm. Parents will enter at gate 3 and move toward the gym area. Students will be dropped off at the back near the back of the cafeteria. After dropping off the students parents will exit gate #4 (near football practice field) turning right toward Isabelle Herson St. .

Can students park on campus? Yes, students can park on campus in the student parking lot. All vehicles must be registered through the Southern University Police Department. Registration will start on _______ for students.

Before Care/After Care
Does SULS have before care/after care? Yes, additional information will be provided prior to the beginning of school.
When will before care and after care begin? After-care and Before-care will start TBA.

Dress Code
What is the dress code policy? See the attached link for the dress code policy.
When do students dress up? Students are expected to dress in dress attire on Mondays. Students will be expected to be in full dress uniform every Monday until otherwise noted. Students will also be expected to be in full dress attire during the honor roll program, special assemblies, and Founders Day. Click here for more information.
Can girls wear navy shorts? Yes. Due to supply challenges for girls' plaid walking shorts, girls will be allowed to wear navy uniform pants, walking shorts, skirts, or skorts (no more than 2” above the knee) temporarily. Once supplies are available, we will inform parents. This will only be for the 2022/2023 school year.
When can students wear spirit shirts (SULS t-shirts). Students can wear spirit shirts on Fridays. Students must wear school uniform pants with spirit shirts. Spirit shirts can be purchased in the Kitten Store.
Can athletes dress down on game day? Athletes will wear school uniforms on game day unless authorized by administration.

Will the school participate in standardized testing for the 2023/2024 school year? Yes, students in 3rd through 11th grade will participate in LEAP 2025 testing. High school students will take LEAP 2025 assessments at the end of certain courses (English I, English II, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and US History). LEAP 2025 will take place in May 2024. If needed, high school students will have an opportunity to retest in December and May.
Will SULS participate in Dual Enrollment? Yes, DE is an essential feature of SULS. Please contact Mrs. Angela Carter-Robinson about Dual Enrollment requirements and questions. She can be contacted at angela_robinson@sulabschool.com.
When is the first day for Dual Enrollment (DE)? August 21, 2023
When should students begin taking the ACT? Students should begin taking the ACT as early as possible, preferably in the 8th grade. Early and continued exposure to the ACT allows students to build test taking stamina and improve their score throughout their high school career.
What are the upcoming ACT dates? The upcoming test dates for the 2023-2024 school year are- September 9, October 28, December 9, February 10, April 13, June 8 and July 13. You can register for the test at www.act.org
Athletics

When can students participate in extracurricular activities? Before all athletes can participate in extracurricular activities they must complete the necessary (LHSAA & SULS) paperwork.
Is my child automatically eligible for LHSAA sports once they enter SULS? Only students who have attended SULS for one calendar year or reside in the SULS attendance zone are eligible for LHSAA sports. Students who do not meet that requirement are not eligible to participate at SULS for one calendar year. Can students bring their own lunch? Yes, lunch must be fully wrapped. Students do not have access to a microwave to heat food.
Can outside food be ordered for students? No, students are not allowed to order outside food (brought by parents, guardians, or outside individuals). Students are not allowed to order food through any food delivery services, including Doordash, Ubereats, and Waitr (or any service that delivers food).

We are excited to announce that the Southern University Laboratory School Summer Reading List for the 2023-2024 school year is now available. Research shows that when students read in the summer, it improves reading skills in addition to increasing the desire to read. Not only that, but reading at least 20 minutes a day increases a child’s vocabulary tremendously. Summer reading is critical for students to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous school year. Students who don't read are at risk of falling behind their classmates.
Nylah Guidry Passes Gavel To Tanner Pruitt
On Wednesday, May 17, 2023 outgoing SGA President Nylah Guidry “passed the Gavel" to the incoming SGA President Tanner Pruitt. The title of Student Government Association President is not one to be taken lightly. It carries many responsibilities. The most important task of the SGA President is to be the leader even when no one is looking. The SGA President is the ultimate ambassador of the Laboratory School.

The Class of 2023 Salutatorian is Miss. Madison Spears. Madison is the daughter of Ms. Angela Spears (C/O 92’). Madison has attended Southern University Laboratory School for 4 years. She has graced the halls daily with a warm smile anytime you encounter her. She has been the epitome of a student athlete. We always put focus on the student part first. Madison is graduating with a 4.095 grade point average while participating in many extracurricular activities.
The Class of 2023 Salutatorian is Miss Madison Spears. Madison is the daughter of Ms. Angela Spears (C/O 92’). Madison has attended Southern University Laboratory School for 4 years. She has graced the halls daily with a warm smile anytime you encounter her.

She has participated in Varsity and Club Volleyball, Youth & Government, the Student Government Association, serving as Secretary, Vice President, Parliamentarian, and the Centennial Miss Southern High.

Kelsie Tillage of Baton Rouge (Senior at Southern University Laboratory School) has had to overcome a reading delay, speech impediment, and ADHD. Kelsie’s experience motivated her to become a teen writing coach. She also galvanized her school to donate over 1700 books to the Center of Literacy. Kelsie received the Gold Medal Congressional Award by accumulating over 400 hours of community service.

Southern University Laboratory School Athletic Department is proud to announce the nomination process for the SULS Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Southern University Laboratory School Athletic Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor those SULS athletes, coaches, and administrators who excelled in their respective sports or coaching/support roles and who helped to bring honor, recognition, distinction, and excellence to SULS by their conduct. This recognition will help maintain the spirit, pride, and sense of community as well as serve as a historical account of the great athletic traditions of Southern University Laboratory School.
Southern University Laboratory School Athletic Department is proud to announce the nomination process for the SULS Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Southern University Laboratory School Athletic Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor those SULS athletes, coaches, and administrators who excelled in their respective sports or coaching/support roles and who helped to bring honor, recognition, distinction, and excellence to SULS by their conduct. This recognition will help maintain the spirit, pride, and sense of community as well as serve as a historical account of the great athletic traditions of Southern University Laboratory School.

Eligibility for Nomination:
Athletes are eligible for nomination 5 years after their class’s graduation. They must be in good standing, or in special circumstances, as determined by the Board Members. Such athletes must have competed in an LHSAA-sanctioned varsity sport and must have excelled in that sport. Among the accomplishments taken into account will be individual (all-District, all-Metro, all-State) and team accomplishments, individual school or team records held, and/or impact on teams and the overall athletic program at SULS during their high school years and accomplishments thereafter.
Nomination is also open to coaches or administrators who have participated with distinction and/or made significant contributions to athletics at Southern University Laboratory School, as evidenced, by the success of their teams and the acknowledgment of their former student-athletes. Such coaches or administrators shall be eligible for nomination beginning 5 years after they have left SULS, or in special circumstances, as determined by the Board Members.
As determined by the Board Members, contributors will also be considered for nomination based on their service and dedication to the athletic programs at SULS.

Southern University honors Charlie Rae Hilliard as a Leading Lady. Charlie is a proud Pre-K student at Southern University Laboratory School where she has been for the past 2 years. Charlie Rae earned the title of Little Miss Southern for the 2022-2-23 school year.

Charlie Rae brings joy to everyone she meets. Her outgoing personality, kind heart, and infectious smile ensures a lasting impression. She enjoys cooking, playing tennis, attending Spanish lessons, piano lessons, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Her Parents, Christopher & Morgan Hilliard are both graduates of Southern University.

Jude Foster Earns Outstanding Volunteer Award
Congratulations to Jude Foster for winning the Louisiana State Fair Foundation Outstanding High School Volunteer Award. Jude is an 11th grade honor student at Southern University Laboratory School. 32 students from surrounding parishes were awarded the volunteer award for their work in the community.

Every high school in the 10 parish Greater Baton Rouge area (Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes) may selected one member of the junior class who has given time and talent as a volunteer in school, religious organizations, and community activities.
Each Outstanding Volunteer will receive a cash award in the amount of $500. In addition, ten (10) Outstanding Volunteers will receive an additional $500 (total of $1,000), and two participants (one male and one female) will receive a total of $2,500 each in recognition of their exceptional contributions to their communities.

Suit Up For The Future
The three-week program will be held at the Louisiana Bar Center and is scheduled on June 12, 2023 – June 30, 2023. Students who complete the program will be eligible for a stipend of up to $250.00! Students must provide their own transportation to the program. Students have the option of paying a residential housing fee if housing is needed (adult chaperone required). Inside the “Suit Up classroom,” students will experience the Socratic teaching method and gain exposure to specified law school courses, including, criminal law and legal research and writing. Students will also receive a mock trial problem, which will serve as the basis for the legal writing assignment and oral argument the students will present to a panel of judges at the end of the program.
In a second component of the “Suit Up classroom,” students will be provided with advice and substantive information from guest speakers, and receive instruction in creating competitive resumes, preparing for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), professionalism, ethics, and workplace etiquette and attire. The time inside the classroom will provide students with ample time to work as a group on assignments and seek feedback from various legal mentors throughout the course.
A third facet of the course will allow Suit Up participants to step outside the classroom and see first-hand what it means to be a “lawyer.” The attorney shadowing is designed to provide students with the following experiences: (1) a tour of the law firm/agency, including all departments, so that students gain an understanding of all of the support staff that comprise a law firm/agency; (2) the opportunity to join the attorney on outings (such as depositions, hearings, and trials); (3) lunch with the attorney; and (4) mentoring and support on the oral argument and supporting legal memorandum being developed by the student. Students will also prepare a list of questions to ask attorneys whom they shadow so that the student gains an appreciation of the day-to-day schedule of an attorney, as well as the role that lawyers play in society and in the administration of justice. *Students must have transportation to and from the shadowing assignment.
Finally, the Suit Up students will attend several field trips. The students will tour two area law schools, the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Court museum, and federal court buildings. During the tours, students will hear from several guest speakers and may have the opportunity to view proceedings at several state and federal courts.

Middle school and high school students ages 13 and older are eligible to apply for the camp. Students of all backgrounds and skill levels are welcome to join! We will have a variety of learning opportunities for grades Pre-K through 12. We will offer Camp S.W.A.G for Elementary students and Bridging the Gap for Middle and High School students. Also, Southern University’s Agricultural Department will host Southern University BAYOU & Southern University BAYOU Camp Ag-Xperience for High School students.

Southern University Laboratory school is pleased to announce our summer program for students entering grades 6 through 12 is back again! In order to maximize the opportunity to polish and strengthen skills in math and ELA while having fun through interactive, hands-on activities, and games, we are offering a summer program for our students and students in our area. The first part of the day will be academic enrichment with SULS staff, and the second part of the day will include STEM activities provided by the College of Sciences and Engineering (CSE)and others from Southern University and A&M College.
Summer hours will be from 8:00am to 3:00pm beginning June 1 to July 30, 2023 Monday-Friday (Extended Day available for an additional fee)
The camp fee will be $200 for SULS students ($300 outside families). Fees cover: camp t-shirt(2), field trips and highly trained staff. The Visual Arts competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and creative abilities. This completion is designed to encourage creativity, innovation, reward outstanding craftsmanship, and reinforce the importance of fine arts.

The Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship award is open to Beta Iota Lambda Chapter mentees and affiliates who are preparing to pursue a bachelor degree, associate degree, technical diploma or certificate at a U.S. accredited college or university. Contingent upon the availability of funding, the scholarship is a one-time only award and will be paid during the first academic year of official enrollment in a four-year University or College or a Career/Vocational/Technical program.
The Scholarship will be paid in two equal installments. The first installment will be paid upon receipt of proof of enrollment at a four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program. The second installment will be paid upon receipt of an official transcript that shows satisfactory academic progress for the first semester of enrollment (completion of at least 12 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.75).

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applicant must meet the following criteria for consideration of an Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship Award:
1) Applicant must reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes (within an approximate 40 mile radius of Baton Rouge, LA); and
2) Must be a Male high school senior graduating in Spring 2023; and
3) Projected completion of the current TOPS core curriculum before graduation from High School; and
4) Plan to attend a four-year University or College OR a Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student; and
5) Minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and minimum; and
6) Minimum ACT score of 20 (or equivalent on SAT) if attending four-year University/ College OR minimum ACT score of 17 (or equivalent on SAT) if attending Career/Vocational/Technical program.
The following documents MUST be attached to and submitted in conjunction with the completed application:
1) Official High School Transcript. The high school transcript must include the (1) seven semesters of your high school matriculation, (2) cite the cumulative grade point average, and (3) be in an envelope sealed and signed by a school official.
2) Test Scores. A copy of your SAT or ACT scores sent directly from your high school in an envelope sealed and signed by a school official.
3) School Recommendation. One typed, signed, and dated current 2022/2023 letter of recommendation from a school official (i.e. principal, teacher/instructor, counselor, advisor, etc.) on the school’s official letter head. The recommendation should include the length of time the recommender has known the applicant and in what capacity; and highlight the applicant’s academic achievements, personal characteristics and leadership ability/skills.
4) Essay. Typed one page essay providing (1) biographical sketch that includes extracurricular and leadership activities, (2) applicants’ educational goals and ambitions, and (3) statement on why the candidate believes he should be awarded an Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship.
5) Color Photograph. Recent portrait (wallet size senior picture/headshot). No proofs or personality shots. Applicant’s name should be printed on the back of the photo.
6) *Community Service Recommendation. One typed, signed, and dated current 2021/2022 letter of recommendation from a community service official or authorized representative of an organization verifying applicant’s current community service involvement. The letter must be on the organization’s official letterhead. The recommendation should include the length of time the recommender has known the applicant and in what capacity; and demonstrate active involvement to benefit the organization and/or community.
*In light of the pandemic environment, we recognize this situation may have restricted opportunities for applicants to engage in community service activities. We will thus evaluate applications accordingly.
SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION AND CRITERIA
ALPHA ENRICHMENT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: Provides a financial award to students who seek to advance their education by enrolling in an accredited four-year University/College. Students applying for the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
· Be a 2022 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
· Be a high school senior with a minimum ACT score of 20 (or equivalent on SAT);
· Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
· Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023.
CAREER/VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP: Provides a financial award to students who seek to advance their education by participating in a vocational or technical program. These programs traditionally focus on specific vocation skills needed for certain occupations. Students applying for the Career/Vocational/Technical Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
· Be a 2023 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
· Be a high school senior with a minimum ACT score of 17 (or equivalent on SAT);
· Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
· Be accepted by or planning to attend a Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the Fall of 2023.
BOOK SCHOLARSHIP: The Book Scholarship provides a financial award for students to purchase textbooks. The Book Scholarship is available to high school students who meet the following criteria:
Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
Be a 2023 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023.
OR
Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
Be a 2023 high school graduate with qualifying minimum ACT score (or SAT equivalent);
Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023..
FOR OUR FUTURE AWARD
In addition to applying for the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship, applicants seeking to enroll into an education institution within the University of Louisiana System may also apply and receive consideration for the “For Our Future Award.” The Award will provide up to a Maximum of $5,000 per academic year for applicants who have a demonstrated and documented need. SULS Participates in Region IV Science Fair
Southern University Laboratory School sent 29 students to the Regional VII Science Fair to compete against students from various high schools. Two students placed in their categories. Kaleb Byrd, 9th grade, placed 3rd in the Behavioral Science category. Cydney Williams, 11th grade, placed in the Microbiology category. All science fair participants not only exemplified their creativity, but also their determination, diligence, and superb work ethics in their researching, planning, and conducting of their project’s plan and experiment.
