SULS Summer Camps 2023
Southern University Laboratory School is excited to announce that we will be hosting our summer enrichment program again this summer. We will have a variety of learning opportunities for grades Pre-K through 12. We will offer Camp S.W.A.G for Elementary students and Bridging the Gap for Middle and High School students. Also, Southern University’s Agricultural Department will host Southern University BAYOU & Southern University BAYOU Camp Ag-Xperience for High School students.

Southern University Laboratory School is excited to announce that we will be hosting our summer enrichment program again this summer. S.W.Ag.-STEM, writing and agriculture. Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade can participate in academically enriched activities that are fun and engaging, STEM hands-on activities, argumentative writing, agriculture and physical education.
Camp Dates: June 1st-June 30, 2023 from 8:00 AM to 3:00pm, Monday-Friday (Extended Day Available for an additional Fee)

SULS Summer Enrichment - Bridging the Gap
Southern University Laboratory school is pleased to announce our summer program for students entering grades 6 through 12 is back again! In order to maximize the opportunity to polish and strengthen skills in math and ELA while having fun through interactive, hands-on activities, and games, we are offering a summer program for our students and students in our area. The first part of the day will be academic enrichment with SULS staff, and the second part of the day will include STEM activities provided by the College of Sciences and Engineering (CSE)and others from Southern University and A&M College.
Summer hours will be from 8:00am to 3:00pm beginning June 1 to July 30, 2023 Monday-Friday (Extended Day available for an additional fee)
The camp fee will be $200 for SULS students ($300 outside families). Fees cover: camp t-shirt(2), field trips and highly trained staff. Campers are required to wear camp t-shirts daily (additional t-shirts available to order for $10.00 each). Breakfast and lunch will be included Monday-Thursday at no additional cost. We are excited to announce the 2023 application for the Southern University BAYOU program is now available. This summer, the program will be residential (you will stay on campus) from June 4 to June 9, 2023.
The Beginning Agricultural Youth Opportunities Unlimited Program provides an opportunity for high school students to gain “first hand” knowledge about career opportunities in Agriculture, Family and Consumer science and related disciplines. Congratulations to Kameron Tillage on placing 4th in the Black & White Photography in Division II. Kameron along with 13 students attended the state Beta Convention in February. The Visual Arts competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and creative abilities. This completion is designed to encourage creativity, innovation, reward outstanding craftsmanship, and reinforce the importance of fine arts.

JUNIOR: PINNING & RING CEREMONY
The annual Ring & Pinning Ceremony for our Juniors will be held on March 24, 2023, at 1:30 pm. Students will receive their rings that were purchased from Herff Jones. If you have purchased a ring from another company, please bring your ring to Ms. Crystal Franklin on the morning of the ceremony.

When your child’s name is called, the parent (guardian/representative) will pin the school’s pin onto the lapel of the student. This moment begins the Junior’s transition into their Senior year. The Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship award is open to Beta Iota Lambda Chapter mentees and affiliates who are preparing to pursue a bachelor degree, associate degree, technical diploma or certificate at a U.S. accredited college or university. Contingent upon the availability of funding, the scholarship is a one-time only award and will be paid during the first academic year of official enrollment in a four-year University or College or a Career/Vocational/Technical program.
The Scholarship will be paid in two equal installments. The first installment will be paid upon receipt of proof of enrollment at a four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program. The second installment will be paid upon receipt of an official transcript that shows satisfactory academic progress for the first semester of enrollment (completion of at least 12 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.75).

In support of educational development and academic excellence, the Alpha Enrichment Foundation on behalf of the Beta Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. offers the following types of scholarships:

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applicant must meet the following criteria for consideration of an Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship Award:
1) Applicant must reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes (within an approximate 40 mile radius of Baton Rouge, LA); and
2) Must be a Male high school senior graduating in Spring 2023; and
3) Projected completion of the current TOPS core curriculum before graduation from High School; and
4) Plan to attend a four-year University or College OR a Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student; and
5) Minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and minimum; and
6) Minimum ACT score of 20 (or equivalent on SAT) if attending four-year University/ College OR minimum ACT score of 17 (or equivalent on SAT) if attending Career/Vocational/Technical program.
The following documents MUST be attached to and submitted in conjunction with the completed application:
1) Official High School Transcript. The high school transcript must include the (1) seven semesters of your high school matriculation, (2) cite the cumulative grade point average, and (3) be in an envelope sealed and signed by a school official.
2) Test Scores. A copy of your SAT or ACT scores sent directly from your high school in an envelope sealed and signed by a school official.
3) School Recommendation. One typed, signed, and dated current 2022/2023 letter of recommendation from a school official (i.e. principal, teacher/instructor, counselor, advisor, etc.) on the school’s official letter head. The recommendation should include the length of time the recommender has known the applicant and in what capacity; and highlight the applicant’s academic achievements, personal characteristics and leadership ability/skills.
4) Essay. Typed one page essay providing (1) biographical sketch that includes extracurricular and leadership activities, (2) applicants’ educational goals and ambitions, and (3) statement on why the candidate believes he should be awarded an Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship.
5) Color Photograph. Recent portrait (wallet size senior picture/headshot). No proofs or personality shots. Applicant’s name should be printed on the back of the photo.
6) *Community Service Recommendation. One typed, signed, and dated current 2021/2022 letter of recommendation from a community service official or authorized representative of an organization verifying applicant’s current community service involvement. The letter must be on the organization’s official letterhead. The recommendation should include the length of time the recommender has known the applicant and in what capacity; and demonstrate active involvement to benefit the organization and/or community.
*In light of the pandemic environment, we recognize this situation may have restricted opportunities for applicants to engage in community service activities. We will thus evaluate applications accordingly.
SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION AND CRITERIA
ALPHA ENRICHMENT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: Provides a financial award to students who seek to advance their education by enrolling in an accredited four-year University/College. Students applying for the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
· Be a 2022 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
· Be a high school senior with a minimum ACT score of 20 (or equivalent on SAT);
· Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
· Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023.
CAREER/VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP: Provides a financial award to students who seek to advance their education by participating in a vocational or technical program. These programs traditionally focus on specific vocation skills needed for certain occupations. Students applying for the Career/Vocational/Technical Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
· Be a 2023 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
· Be a high school senior with a minimum ACT score of 17 (or equivalent on SAT);
· Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
· Be accepted by or planning to attend a Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the Fall of 2023.
BOOK SCHOLARSHIP: The Book Scholarship provides a financial award for students to purchase textbooks. The Book Scholarship is available to high school students who meet the following criteria:
Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
Be a 2023 high school graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or above;
Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023.
OR
Reside within East Baton Rouge Parish or neighboring parishes;
Be a 2023 high school graduate with qualifying minimum ACT score (or SAT equivalent);
Be able to demonstrate community or extracurricular involvement; and
Be accepted by or planning to attend an accredited four-year University/College or Career/Vocational/Technical program as a full-time student beginning in the fall of 2023..
FOR OUR FUTURE AWARD
In addition to applying for the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship, applicants seeking to enroll into an education institution within the University of Louisiana System may also apply and receive consideration for the “For Our Future Award.” The Award will provide up to a Maximum of $5,000 per academic year for applicants who have a demonstrated and documented need. Please note that this award is separate from the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship award, therefore, applicants must apply separately. Further, any applicant who qualifies for and receives the For Our Future Award will not be eligible to receive the Alpha Enrichment Foundation Scholarship award.

Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has initiated a Pre-College in partnership with Southern University Laboratory School. Targeting students from 10th -12th grade, they will be targeting young students across the Baton Rouge area assisting them with college readiness skills; thus, preparing them for college readiness.
Through community-based efforts Baton Rouge Sigma will provide professional development to improve individualized test scores, assist with college and financial aid applications and foster relationships between college recruiting activities. They will also partner with SULS to embrace current programs and assist in the areas where there may be some challenges. The optimal goal is to ensure the students have the resources and exposure needed to be successful as they move forward with their college and career aspirations.

IBM Facilitates STEM Conversation with SULS Students
On Thursday, February 9, 2023, International Business Machines (IBM) visited Southern University Laboratory School to engage students about STEM areas highlighting technology and how integral it is in their everyday lives. IBM staff members introduced themselves, highlighting their educational background (schools & majors) along with the projects they have worked on. The SULS students then followed suit introducing themselves and their future aspirations. (Click here for more)
On Thursday, February 9, 2023, International Business Machines (IBM) visited Southern University Laboratory School to engage students about STEM areas highlighting technology and how integral it is in their everyday lives. IBM staff members introduced themselves, highlighting their educational background (schools & majors) along with the projects they have worked on. The SULS students then followed suit introducing themselves and their future aspirations.
IBM staff members were able to provide a broad range of careers; thus, highlighting the vast areas of STEM opportunities available to students. These fields included but not limited to computer science, psychology, sociology, animal science, medicine, and business just to name a few. This interactive experience allowed staff members as well as students the ability to ask probing questions; therefore, cultivating an atmosphere for both groups to learn from each other.
Followed by the Q&A session, IBM facilitated an exercise with the students, asking them to build an application for everyday use. Working collaboratively in groups, the students were tasked with finding ways to find solutions to assist society in insurance, physical therapy, or understanding various mathematical computations. There were so many interesting ideas. We wish we had more time to discuss. We would like to thank IBM and their staff for pouring into our future. Among the staff members, Former SULS students Yvette Moody and Frederick Christian ℅ 91’ assisted with the facilitation of the event.

Southern University Parking Information
The Southern University Office of Traffic and Parking is a division of the Southern University-BR Police Department. This office is responsible for controlling the movement of vehicular traffic and enforcing parking regulations on the campus. The Traffic & Parking Regulations require all students, faculty and staff parking on campus to register their vehicle, purchase a parking permit and park in their designated parking area during the zone parking hours of 7:00AM – 5:00PM Monday-Friday.
The Southern University Office of Traffic and Parking is a division of the Southern University-BR Police Department. The Traffic & Parking Regulations require all students, faculty and staff parking on campus to register their vehicle, purchase a parking permit and park in their designated parking area during the zone parking hours of 7:00AM – 5:00PM Monday-Friday. A parking permit is required at all times while parking on campus. Permits are to be purchased from the SU Traffic and Parking Office at the cost of $45.00. Starting on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 thru Tuesday, January 24, 2023, vehicle registration and permit pick-up will be at the F. G. Clark Activity Center from 9AM to 3PM M-F (No permit registration on the weekends). After January 24, 2023, vehicle registration and permit pick up will be at the Traffic and Parking Office. Please register for your permit online prior to picking up your permit at www.permits.subr.edu. You will need to know your U number to use this permit registration link. If you are having an issue with this link, you will be able to manually register when you go to pay for and pick up your permit.
Students may also purchase a student reserved parking permit $50.00 (in addition to purchasing their $45.00 required permit) to park in a designated area closer to their classes. There is a limited amount of these reserved student permits available to purchase on a first-come-first-serve-basis per semester.
Vehicles parking on campus without a valid parking permit will be ticketed. Three or more unpaid unregistered tickets will result in your vehicle to be booted and/or towed at your expense. Student vehicles parked in an employee area, reserved space, fire lane, handicapped area without proper credentials will be ticketed, booted and/or towed.
The Traffic & Parking Division has installed two types of meters around inner campus; The Multi Space Pay Station and the Double-Space Meters. These meters accept credit card/debit card payments only at $1.50 per hour. These meters are in operation from 7:00AM to 6:00PM Monday – Friday.
Students are allowed to park in any metered space on campus as long as the meter space is paid for at time of parking. Parking in a metered space without payment is a cause for your vehicle to be ticketed, immobilized and/or towed at driver’s/owner’s expense.

The Louisiana YMCA Youth Legislature conference is a three-day conference held each year that engages high school students from across the state at every level of state government. Students assume roles in all three branches of government as they debate issues of local and state importance. Through the conference, they gain first-hand knowledge of the democratic process and develop leadership and presiding skills. Youth Legislature is a student-led conference where State Board officials are elected by their peers to plan and preside over each conference.
Congratulations to Kalen Williams and Alaysia Raymond! Their bill on the modification of the, “Stand Your Ground,” law ranked high in Committee, passed the House of Representatives, then the Senate. On the last day of session, the presiding Governor vetoed the legislation.
The students displayed their writing, listening, oratorical, and debating skills throughout the conference. Job well done to all attendees.

SULS Virtual School Earns "C" Rating
We are happy to announce that Southern University Laboratory Virtual School scored a 66.2 C for the 2021-2022 school year! This program has shown tremendous growth even during a global pandemic. The school began with a 40.2 F in 2018-2019. While most schools struggled post COVID SULVS continued to improve academically as a result of uninterrupted learning due to the virtual environment. Congratulations!!!
Southern University Laboratory Virtual School has grown a total of 26 points since the 2018-2019 school year. The school began with a 40.2 F in 2018-2019. While most schools struggled post COVID SULVS continued to improve academically as a result of uninterrupted learning due to the virtual environment. For the 2020-2021 school year, schools were given a simulated score where SULVS increased their SPS to 52.4 D which was an increase of 12.2 points. STEM NOLA is providing a FREE opportunity for family fun & STEM Learning as we expose and inspire future Innovators, Creators, Makers and Entrepreneurs in New Orleans and surrounding areas! Attendees will learn about opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as they engage with more than 60+ STEM activities and demonstrations. All required materials will be provided when students arrive. The IN-PERSON STEM FEST will be held Dec. 10 from 9:00am - 12:00pm in New Orleans, LA 70127 at Joe W. Brown Park - 5601 Read Blvd.

Real Talk: A Candid Conversation about Dating Abuse
The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) Youth Committee will host a virtual panel discussion entitled “Real Talk: A Candid Conversation about Dating Abuse.” The panelist will consist of students and law enforcement as they discuss some of the most pressing issues relating to dating abuse among young people. The moderator will be Mrs. Twahna P. Harris, founder and executive director of the The Butterfly Society. The panel will begin at 6:00 pm and conclude at 7:30 pm.
