It is my pleasure to welcome you to Southern University Laboratory School’s website! We invite you to explore our virtual world and discover how much the Lab has to offer in our academic curriculum, athletics, performing and visual arts, community service and extracurricular activities. Let me try to capture what sets apart the Lab School from any other.
Established in 1922, the founding of a University based school was the realization of Dr. J.S. Clark’s dream that a strong training school should be established to provide a training ground for University students enrolled in the teacher preparation program. The earliest school was called the Southern University Model Training School. In the early 1930’s the name was changed to Southern University Demonstration School. A few years later, the school was renamed the Southern University Laboratory School.
The Laboratory School was first accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1936. SACS is currently known as AdvancED, has criteria to effectively identify schools that drive student performance and continuous improvement. We were awarded re-accreditation in January 2013.
Over the past few years, we have seen a significant growth in our enrollment and test scores because of the hard work from a dedicated faculty, staff and administration. In the fall of 2015, our school report card improved from an 83C to a 95.8B (only 4.2 points from an “A” distinction)!
We have recently become an active member of the International Association of Laboratory Schools (IALS). IALS is an international association of pre-kindergarten through graduate laboratory and university affiliated schools engaged in practices of teacher training, curriculum development, research, professional development, and educational experimentation for the purpose of supporting its’ member schools.
In 2013, we opened the Southern University Laboratory Virtual School (SULVS). At SULVS, we service students throughout the state of Louisiana as we have students from every parish enrolled!
